If you grew up in the nineties, you'll remember the old show "Wishbone" which aired after school on PBS. In it, a plucky Jack Russell terrier with a love of books would fantasize every episode about being the protagonist in a "book of the week", which ranged from H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine", to "Sherlock Holmes", and even "Silas Mariner." This was a rather sophisticated pup.
And now, it looks like Wishbone's gonna get his very own movie, with Universal and Mattel teaming up with GREEN BOOK's Peter Farrelly to produce this new live action feature, which I assume will be more high-tech than the show. If you remember, the show basically just used voiceover to dramatize Wishbone's thoughts, and characters in the stories were able to understand him because…well…they just could!
According to Deadline, "the family film project reps the first theatrical collaboration between Mattel Films and Universal Pictures and the ninth Mattel Films project in development. Roy Parker (2019 The Blacklist’s This House is Not for Sale) will write the script. Robbie Brenner, executive producer, and Kevin McKeon, supervising producer, will oversee the project for Mattel Films, and Lexi Barta, director of development, will oversee the project for Universal Pictures."
OK,OK, OK. That all sounds good, but who's gonna play Wishbone, and will he still be a Jack Russell terrier? And what book is he gonna get into this time? If it's a feature, does that mean he's gonna tackle something like "Lord of the Rings", or should we get really dark and have him read something like Bret Easton Ellis's "Less Than Zero" or some Chuck Palahniuk? The possibilities are endless!
