We're entering our third stay-at-home lockdown here in Ontario, Canada, but if I were in certain areas within the U.S. I might be able to get my hands on some sweet new Blu-rays that have hit the shelves this week.
What movies, you say? Well, I'm glad you asked. Josh Greenbaum's Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is getting the Blu-ray treatment this week, and who couldn't use a good laugh at times like these? The laugh-out-loud comedy stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo as lifelong friends Barb and Star, who embark on the adventure of a lifetime when they decide to leave their small Midwestern town for the first time – ever. At the time of its February release, the film was a major hit with critics, including our own Matt Rooney, who in his review said that Barb and Star is an "absolutely bizarre" film that invites you to "laugh your ass off."
Another major release is Studio Ghibli and NHK Enterprise's Earwig and the Witch. Directed by Goro Miyazaki, Earwig and the Witch is the first full 3D film made by Studio Ghibli. In the film, an orphan girl, Earwig, is adopted by a witch and comes home to a spooky house filled with mystery and magic. The movie looks to offer something a little different from Studio Ghibli, who's known for presenting such animated classics as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my list of films to watch once it's available in the Great North.
Other films being ported to Blu-ray this week include Shadow in the Cloud, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Neil Marshall's The Reckoning, Simon West's Skyfire, and more! Well, not too much more. It's kind of a thin week. Thankfully, the pandemic appears to be on its last legs, and the Blu-rays should be flowing like wine once again before too long.
