A new month brings a wealth of new Blu-ray and DVD releases, so now's a great time to prepare and see what we have ahead of us in the month of January! You can always head to our BLU-RAY AND DVD RELEASE DATES section for a more complete list, but in this column we'll go over some of the more popular titles hitting shelves over the next 5 weeks!
January 3
We kick off the new year with a very exciting release in THE SHELTER! Written and directed by Arrow in the Head himself, John Fallon, and produced in part by JoBlo, THE SHELTER stars Michael Pare and tells the story of a homeless man who finds shelter within an abandoned two-story house. He eventually discovers that he is not alone and that the premises won't let him leave. It's guaranteed to kick off your new year with some thought-provoking drama and psychological horror! If you're looking to keep the horror kick going, check out Adam Wingard's take on the found footage genre with BLAIR WITCH!
January 10
Next up on our release schedule is guaranteed to be one of the more underrated flicks from 2016, DEEPWATER HORIZON. Directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell, this disaster movie garnered a 9/10 from our own Chris Bumbray (check out his review HERE). Also filed in the "underrated" category is THE ACCOUNTANT featuring Batman himself, Ben Affleck. Otherwise you can turn up the paranoia and get your TV fix with the likes of season 2 of Mr. Robot and season 5 of Homeland.
January 17
This week brings a film I have somewhat of a personal stake in, in that it was my first set-visit. I'm talking about none other than Greg Mottola's KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES starring Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot, Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher. You can check out my write-up of the set-visit HERE, and while the critics weren't kind with this one, I'm willing to bet it'll fare better on Blu-ray/DVD. Otherwise you can check out another box-office disappointment in THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN with Emily Blunt.
January 24
The end of January will afford you the opportunity to relive one of David Bowie's more notable roles in the release of THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. Otherwise, you can catch up on some Nicolas Cage greatness where he faces off against CG sharks in USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE. If you're looking for far prettier leading actors, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander star in THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS, which hits Blu-ray/DVD this week. Finally, fan-favorite Sherlock featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman returns in a spiffy season 4 Blu-ray!
January 31
We cap off the month of January with a film that took forever to be released, MASTERMINDS. The Jared Hess-directed comedy didn't make waves upon release, but may please fans of the director. Also being dumped at the end of the month is the release of TYLER PERRY'S BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN. If you're looking for something a little less scary, you can play the Disney catch-up game with a re-release of PINOCCHIO. Easily one of Disney's best and if you haven't seen it lately, this is a great opportunity to re-acquaint yourself with a classic! If none of those catch your eye, then no worries – there's always next month!
