What will you be watching this weekend? Skyfall, Dexter, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Walking Dead and They Live

Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.

So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…

IN THEATERS…

Bond is back!

There is only one new movie out this weekend that I care about and it goes by the name of SKYFALL. Since this year marks the 50th anniversary of James Bond kicking ass and bedding dames for Queen and country on the big screen I have been excitedly prepping for 007’s newest adventure for the past few weeks by rewatching all of the previous Bonds (even the unofficial ones) in anticipation of what everyone is calling a return to the classic Bond film aesthetic. I’ve heard comparisons made to Connery’s FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, which is about the highest praise a Bond film can receive in my book (it’s my personal favorite of the franchise). I also can’t express how excited I am that Q is back and don’t even get me started on the amazing theme by Adele … it’s damn near perfect.

By the time you’ve read this I will have already seen SKYFALL as I am making the 3-hour trip to see it in IMAX as it is getting released a day early for IMAX screens. If you are considering checking out SKYFALL in IMAX I would encourage going that route, not only because seeing anything in IMAX is awesome but because it was announced SKYFALL would get a larger aspect ratio for IMAX screens meaning you’ll get to see about 26% more of the picture than you would if you went to a regular ol’ theater.

While I’m an absolute Bond nut I’m also the kind of guy to distance myself from spoilers in reviews (yeah, kinda hard considering I work for movie news site) but thankfully I only needed JoBlo’s resident Bond fanatic Chris Bumbray’s  SKYFALL 10/10 review to confirm what I had already hoped. Then if there was still any doubts in my mind JimmyO assuaged them with his own SKYFALL review earlier this week. Yeah, I’m excited.

ON TELEVISION…

If I’m being honest there is a strong possiblity I’ll be seeing SKYFALL in the theater at least once more this weekend, so it’s a good thing DVR technology exists because there are at least two shows I have no intention of missing.

The zombie apocalypse was never going to be a picnic but holy balls THE WALKING DEAD didn’t pull any punches last week. I have read up to about the 40th issue of the comic series before stopping so I could be surprised by the show (even though it doesn’t follow the comics too closely) but  I knew some pretty gruesome junk was in store for Rick Grimes and his ragtag team of survivors but I really wasn’t prepared for how it all played out. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone that still hasn’t seen it but let’s just say young Carl is more of man than anyone could have imagined. It was brutal … the events that happened last weekend will have a long lasting effect on the show as a whole and I can’t wait to see where they take it next.

Well it looks like this season of DEXTER just took an interesting turn … I’m almost beginning to think my favorite serial killer serial killer could be slipping. I guess a mutual history of homicide could be as good as any for building a meaningful relationship. Who are we to judge, right? But c’mon Detective Quinn! What are you thinking? You’ve made some bonehead decisions in the past but I had come to forgive you because you seemed like the kind of guy I could grab a beer with and shoot the sh*t … now I just don’t know.

ON DVD & BLU-RAY…

I wasn’t totally onboard with the Spidey reboot, especially that whole new “untold story” portion of his origin but I went ahead and checked out THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN anyway in theaters and while I definitely had some problems with it there is no denying that Andrew Garfield is the perfect webhead. Through in the amazing chemistry he had with Emma Stone (his love interest both on and off the screen) and you get a pretty adorable adaption of Spidey. I think the good out weighed the bad on this one so I’ll be picking it up on Blu-ray, I’m pretty interested to see how it holds up to a second viewing.

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass…and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

Those immortal ad-libbed words from the lips of thespian “Rowdy” Roddy Rod Piper that were uttered in John Carpenter’s 1988 alien invasion camp classic THEY LIVE will themselves live on in eternity and now you can experience it on Blu-ray for the first time! This movie is the very definition of “camp” and features one of the greatest alley brawls this side of WEST SIDE STORY. It almost goes without saying that I must have THEY LIVE, just don’t forget to put the glasses on.

I can honestly say there hasn’t been a Muppet movie I didn’t love but if I had to choose just one it would without question be THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL. I mean it has Michael Caine “bah humbugging” around as Ebeneezer Scrooge, how perfect is that?! I could never even find a DVD copy of this perennial puppet Christmas classic but now I won’t have to as it just got itself a Blu-ray release! I’m ready for winter now, bring it on.
