Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.
So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…
IN THEATERS…
You know what I find so awesome about Ben Affleck’s new flick ARGO? It’s based on a true endeavor to get six Americans out of Iran during one of the most intense hostage situations in history with a ploy so damn crazy to possibly be true … but it is. I have come to believe in Affleck’s talent behind the camera and I know I’m not alone in this sentiment. There is already Oscar buzz around ARGO but who really cares about that when JoBlo’s own JimmyO gave it a perfect score in his review! A rare JoBlo 10/10?! Now that’s something that deserves my attention.
I can’t pinpoint one singular reason why SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS looks so enjoyable? Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell as dog stealing con-men? Woody Harrelson as a vindictive dog owner that just happens to be a criminal kingpin? Colin Farrell and IN BRUGES writer/director Martin McDonagh reuniting? No, for me it was a clearly unstable Tom Waits petting a bunny. I’m sure you’ve seen the trailers for SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS already and l chuckled but if you want a real good laugh check out this re-enactment of the the redband trailer that replaces the actors with cats. Then if you can stop laughing long enough head to the theater I’ll see you there. If you are still on the fence on whether or not SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS is your kind of crazy check out our review right here.
THE MASTER is a flick that I have been meaning to check out for a few weeks but wasn’t playing anywhere near my base of operations, until now. True, I won’t get to experience it in glorious IMAX as director P.T. Anderson intended but I’ll at least get a chance to check it out on the big screen without having to go on a 9-hour roadtrip … which I very strongly considered doing.

ON TELEVISION…
So far this season of DEXTER has been a bit of a slow-burn but I sense a payoff is imminent. It’s only a matter of time before Dex’s “Dark Passenger” resurfaces and does so with a vengeance. Without spoiling anything my favorite part from last had to be the efficient use of a screwdriver, like the guy on the receiving end I did not see that one coming.
Maybe it’s a depressing commentary on the American political system but I look forward to the SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE presidential debate spoofs more than the actual thing. SNL sophomore Jay Pharoh is slaying me with his Obama impersonation. This week’s host is Christina Applegate and while I’m not sure what she is promoting (maybe her new sitcom UP ALL NIGHT?) I really hope Will Ferrel drops by in character as Ron Burgundy. It’s about time we get that ANCHORMAN 2 ball rolling.
ON DVD & BLU-RAY…
While I enjoyed the visually stunning PROMETHEUS in theaters I’m not rushing to get it on Blu-ray just yet as a certain Spielberg classic tugs at my nostalgia loving heart a little bit more. That’s right E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL came to Blu-ray for this week and it’s an instant must-own for me. Restored to its original cut (screw walkie talkies they’ve got guns!) I can’t wait to see it on Blu-ray.
Added Bonus: The JoBlo Podcast crew recently recorded an E.T. Commentary, that’s what we call synergy schmoes!
Just in case that wasn’t enough of a nostalgia overload one of my favorite, and highly underrated, Disney flicks is coming to Blu-ray for the first time as well. 1986’s THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE was my first introduction into a lifelong love of Sherlock Holmes stories. It came just prior to the boom of instant Disney classics in the ’90’s, is admittedly a little rough around the edges but it has a certain charm to it.
