Finally! The work week is over and you’ll have some free time to relax, crack a cold one, pop that corn and nuke some ‘chos all in the noble pursuit of cinematic entertainment! Every Friday, we’d like to hear what everyone will be watching over the weekend, whether it be on TV, DVD and Blu-ray or in theaters.
So what’s on your movie agenda this weekend? Here’s what I’m thinking about watching…
IN THEATERS…
Looks like this weekend’s theatrical releases are mostly of the comedic variety ranging from R-rated teddy bears to Channing Tatum and Mathew McConaughey sporting banana hammocks. It has been a while since I could claim to be a die-hard FAMILY GUY fan (they sucked me back in with their STAR WARS spoofs) but I’m more than willing to give creator Seth McFarlane’s first big time Hollywood flick TED a shot. He had me laughing at “thunder buddies” and then won me over by throwing Mila Kunis into the mix. If you didn’t catch Chris Bumbray’s review of the film, check it out right HERE. It’s obvious that Hollywood flicks generally favor boobs over beefcake, which works just fine for me but it’s the 21st Century and the womenfolk deserve some scantily clad eyecandy as much as us dudes and with MAGIC MIKE shaking its way into theaters this weekend count one more win for equal rights. For those of you fortunate enough to live near a theater screening MOONRISE KINGDOM, director Wes Anderson’s latest, I’m truly jealous. This weekend it’s expanding to more screens, unfortunately for me it is still not showing in my podunk town. Maybe next weekend …

ON TELEVISION…
HBO won’t let up just because another season of GAME OF THRONES has come to an end. Last Sunday was the premier of THE NEWSROOM, writer Aaron Sorkin’s latest endeavor kind of blew me away. It may not suit everyone’s tastes (it can lay the idealism on pretty thick) but it won me over with news anchor Jeff Daniels’ opening outburst that took no prisoners and kept me enthralled with Sorkin’s always brilliant writing. If you missed the first episode HBO has it available to watch for free RIGHT OVER HERE. I recently gave the Stephen Spielberg produced alien invasion series FALLING SKIES a shot, which is three episodes into its second season on TNT. What it lacks in effects it makes up for with some solid characters, it didn’t instantly win me over like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA did a few years back but I’m willing to see where the series goes for a bit longer. On the sports front I’ll most likely find myself sitting in a bar this weekend and that probably means the EURO CUP soccer semi-finals will be on tap and I also spotted Michael Phelps doing his thing in some OLYMPIC TRIALS, hide your weed London!
ON DVD & BLU-RAY…
Finally, there are many cool new releases coming out on discs this week, but for my money it’s not going to get much better than 21 JUMP STREET, which was easily the funniest movie I have seen in theaters this year. To any of you Channing Tatum haters still out there let it be known that he steals every scene he’s in and may be a comedic savant. I’m a big sucker for anything related to classic Hollywoodland and as such I caught a couple screenings of last years silent Oscar-winning Best Picture THE ARTIST when it was out in theaters and I loved it entirely. I fully expect to pick this up and share it with as many unexpecting people as possible as I firmly believe it deserved the accolades and is worth checking out if you missed it the first time around. I love The Criterion Collection (as you’ll come to know) and this week they released the early Alfred Hitchcock 1935 spy thriller THE 39 STEPS and as it is my personal policy to own any Hitchcock that becomes available on Blu-ray it should go without saying this one is on my list. The fact that it’s also Criterion edition simply makes it a no-brainer.
