Developing a TV series based around a film doesn't always work out, but I've got my fingers crossed that FX's upcoming show based on Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS will succeed where others have failed. The network gave a pilot order to the half-hour comedy earlier this year and now FX has officially ordered a 10-episode first season. Here we go.
Set in New York City, the series follows three vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years. Matt Berry plays Lazslo, the goofiest in the house, the type of vampire who turns into a bat and flies into a wall, with Kayvan Novak playing Nandor, the head vampire of the house, Natasia Demetriou playing Nadja, the badass female vampire of the house, and Harvey Guillen believed to be playing Nandor's assistant. "'What We Do in the Shadows' only gets better with age thanks to this brilliant adaptation for television by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi," said FX’s co-president of original programming Nick Grad. "Their feature version was a hilarious, fresh take on the mundanity of everyday life that even immortals must face. We are thankful to them, Paul Simms and Scott Rudin, and this amazing cast for taking us deeper into the shadows with this series." What We Do in the Shadows is expected to debut on FX in spring 2019.
The TV series isn't the only WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS based project in the works, as Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are also (slowly) developing a sequel centered around the group of werewolves featured in the first film which is titled WE'RE WOLVES, as well as a spin-off series called Wellington Paranormal which follows the bumbling cops Karen and Mike from the first movie in sort of a "mockumentary X-Files."
