Taika Waititi is having a great rise lately. After helming THOR: RAGNAROK the man has been tapped to direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of AKIRA and has shepherded the killer TV adaptation of his horror-comedy WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. But whatever happened to that WWDITS spinoff movie WE'RE WOLVES? Well, Waititi says… he's still working on it. But at least he plans to have it out before you die. His word, not mine.
Specifically, he says:
When are you going to die? Do you have a … deadline before your death? I guarantee it before then. Five years, 10 years? It took us seven years to write the [first] film, so you do the math. That was a sad thing to say.
He adds:
Werewolves’ is the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making. Every couple of years we say, we’re making this new film called ‘Werewolves,’ which follows the werewolves from the film. I feel bad to even mention it now because we keep saying it, [but] it’s like a dad saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll be home for Christmas.’
Finally, he jokes:
I suppose we’re just two dads out on the road enjoying our lives and going, ‘We’re not coming home for Christmas.’ We’ll send a postcard. It’s not like we don’t want to come home for Christmas. We would like nothing more but we have a lot of shit going on.
While the world awaits word on when this spin-off will get off the ground, you can always enjoy the first season of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS starring Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Natasia Demetriou currently airing over on FX. The first season's final episode "Ancestry" directed by Taika Waititi and written by Jemaine Clement, Stefani Robinson, Tom Scharpling & Paul Simms airs on May 29, 2019.
