One of my favorite films of 2015 was Taika Waititi’s sweet, hilarious and refreshingly bloody WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, which told the story of three likable vampires who have trouble adjusting to their new roommate. The mockumentary proved to be a success for its director in more ways than one – it led to him being hired by Marvel for THOR: RAGNAROK. That’s quite a leap for the New Zealander, but if you’re concerned his new superhero gig has taken his attention away from the world of comical monsters, you’ve got another thing coming.
We had heard rumblings last summer that Waititi and his co-star/co-writer Jemaine Clement were planning on a follow-up to the film, allegedly focusing on Rhys Darby’s werewolf Anton and his pack of overly polite lycanthropes. Don’t swear too loudly, but it seems as though it’s actually happening.
While in Sundance promoting his latest film, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, Waititi spoke briefly to CraveOnline about what he has in store for his WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS characters:
Jemaine [Clement] and I are trying to write a werewolves spin-off…It’s going to be called We’re Wolves, like ‘We are wolves.’ We’re Wolves.”
Apparently, this will be Waititi’s next movie after THOR, but who knows at this point. RAGNAROK doesn’t come out until November of next year, and a lot can happen between now and then. Still, the thought of seeing Vladislav, Deacon and Viago once again sparring with sensitive werewolf Anton is one that brings a smile to my face. (Because I’m not willing to believe the vampire roomies won’t be making at least a few appearances in this spinoff.)
