OUR PICKS FOR January 7th – 13th

Wanna watch something….like a real life X-Files?

PROJECT BLUE BOOK (Airs January 8th on History) – The X-Files ranks as one of my all-time favorite series. For a while, I would consume anything related to conspiracy theories and aliens that I could. Since then, few shows have captured the same paranoia that Chris Carter's series did, but this new series looks like it could hit the same notes. Starring Neal McDonough, this scripted series claims to be based on declassified government documents and could be very cool.

Wanna watch something….to get you ready for KING OF THE MONSTERS?

GODZILLA: THE PLANET EATER (Premieres January 9th on Netflix) – There are so many movies featuring Godzilla that it may be hard to know where to start. Luckily, this anime version is able to do what the limited budgets of the Japanese live action films could not. So, as audiences prepare for the new American film coming this summer, you can enjoy this really cool looking cartoon.

Wanna watch something….for fans of The Goldbergs?

SCHOOLED (Premieres January 9th on ABC) – I have yet to watch a single episode of the 1980s-set The Goldbergs, but the trailers for this 90s set spinoff have been crammed down my throat so many times, I have decided to give in. It looks harmless enough but coming from a background where I was a teacher for a short time, this series hits home. Who knows, it could actually be kind of funny.

Wanna watch something….that is the funniest sitcom on network television?

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (Premieres January 10th on NBC) – The cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine last year made me very sad. Luckily, FOX's loss is NBC's gain as the Andy Samberg-led sitcom is back without missing a beat. I have no doubt that the show will be just as quirky and silly as it has always been. Six years in and the show doesn't seem to be flagging at all. I am hoping that NBC's marketing push gains a new audience for this great comedy.

Wanna watch something….that might be funny (despite airing on CBS)?

FAM (Premieres January 10th on CBS) – You may see CBS and run away knowing they typically air garbage sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, but this new series starring Nina Dobrev and the great Gary Cole looks to be another harmless mid-season replacement. I am cautiously optimistic because Cole is excellent in everything he does, no matter how stupid.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….that you should really watch if you like geeky scifi comedy?

FUTURE MAN (Premieres January 11th on Hulu) – The first season of Seth Rogen's Future Man was way better than I expected. I came late to the party and enjoyed the mix of geeky inside jokes and scifi insanity and the trailer for season two looks to take it up a notch. Josh Hutcherson continues to shine in the title role while the underrated Eliza Coupe is becoming one of my favorite comedic actresses.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….about sex starring Gillian Anderson?

SEX EDUCATION (Premieres January 11th on Netflix) – There is a lot of buzz building for this new series starring Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield, but there are virtually no trailers to be found. A nice coming of age comedy with dramatic elements and a focus on sex, this could be a sleeper hit from across the pond. Plus, Gillian Anderson looks gorgeous as always, so I will be checking this out when it hits Netflix.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….really, really f*cking good?

TRUE DETECTIVE (Premieres January 13th on HBO) – Any doubts that Nic Pizzolatto was a one trick pony after critics and fans were underwhelmed by the second season can rest assured. The third season of True Detective is brilliant and on par with the Matthew McConaughey/Woody Harrelson led first season. Mahershala Ali delivers one of the best performances of his career and will no doubt garner plenty of awards. Trust me, this is already the best show of 2018.
