OUR PICKS FOR March 11th – 17th
Wanna watch something….that dramatizes one of England's most sensational recent crimes?
MANHUNT (Premieres March 11th on AcornTV) – The cast and crew on this ITV series may not as familiar as other British imports, but that doesn't take away from the popularity of this true crime drama. Airing to acclaim overseas, Manhunt tells the story of cops hunting a murderer and sex criminal. It may look conventional compared to a lot of domestic shows, but it may be worth checking out if you have nothing else to watch.
Wanna watch something….like YouTube but with a foul-mouthed Bob Saget hosting?
VIDEOS AFTER DARK (Premieres March 12th on ABC) – Growing up, America's Funniest Home Videos was destination viewing for my family. Something about people falling down always cracks me up. While the main ABC series is still going strong, the network is bringing Bob Saget back to host this more adult-oriented take on the show. While it may seem unnecessary in this era of YouTube, seeing Saget without his Full House demeanor could make for a fun show.
Wanna watch something….with action, drama, Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac?
TRIPLE FRONTIER (Premieres March 15th on Netflix) – After the debacle with Steven Spielberg and whether Netflix movies should be Oscar contenders comes JC Chandor's latest film which looks as big screen as they come. With a cast featuring Oscar Isaac, Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam and many more, TRIPLE FRONTIER could be one of Netflix's best attempts to steal theater-going audiences with a movie that looks as theatrical worthy as they come.
Wanna watch something….that brings The Bluths back to solve a mystery?
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (Premieres March 15th on Netflix) – The most recent season of Arrested Development was not only lackluster, it was only half of the story. The second half debuts with a continuation of the whodunit storyline started last year. Don't expect any difference in quality as these episodes were filmed at the same time as the first half. Still, some Arrested Development is better than none, so go for it you binge-monkeys!
Wanna watch something….that brings an end to one of the best series you aren't watching?
CATASTROPHE (Premieres March 15th on Amazon Prime) – I have been a fan of Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan long before this series debuted in 2015 but their dynamic both behind the scenes and on screen have made Catastrophe one of the best shows on TV. Still, after four seasons, the story of a couple who come together under unusual circumstances to create a family is coming to an end. The trailer looks just as touching and hilarious as the first three seasons, so here's hoping the story wraps up as nicely as it looks to be.
Wanna watch something….from the directors of DEADPOOL and FIGHT CLUB?
LOVE, DEATH + ROBOTS (Premieres March 15th on Netflix) – David Fincher has not made a film in five years and has only directed episodes of the excellent series Mindhunter in that time. In a producer capacity alongside DEADPOOL's Tim Miller, Fincher is bringing this animated anthology to us to try and make up for the hole in his filmography. While it may not be as good as a feature film from Fincher, this dynamic and vivid animated series looks like it could be a fun way to bide our time until he can make another masterpiece.
Wanna watch something….with Idris Elba playing a funny DJ/manny?
TURN UP CHARLIE (Premieres March 15th on Netflix) – Idris Elba can do anything and make it look good. That includes playing a loser 40-something DJ who takes a job as a manny for his best friend's kid. Yeah, it sounds lame and it is kind of lame, but Elba puts his heart into this passion project inspired by his real life. It isn't great but it is fun and you could do a lot worse.
Wanna watch something….with Paul Giamatti swearing a lot?
BILLIONS (Premieres March 17th on Showtime) – I have to admit I have not watched a single episode of Billions despite the cast including some of my favorite actors of recent years. Paul Giamatti alone should have made this required viewing for me and yet it still has fallen off my radar season after season. The trailer for this newest run of episodes looks like the perfect blend of pulp and grit and soapy goodness that I may just have to binge every episode before this Sunday rolls around.
