OUR PICKS FOR December 10th – 16th

Wanna watch something….with that guy from THE HANGOVER?

KEN JEONG CRACKS CHRISTMAS (Premieres December 12th on YouTube) – Comedian and CRAZY RICH ASIANS actor Ken Jeong takes virtually any gig he can get on screen. I don't fault the guy especially since a broken clock is right twice a day. Still, this harmless Christmas special looks like a casual watch that you can play in the background for a few chuckles and some seasonal joy. Hey, it is almost Christmas, so standards are a bit lower, right?

Wanna watch something….special for Christmas (with a little Devil worship)?

CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA: A MIDWINTER'S TALE (Premieres December 14th on Netflix) – The fan base for Sabrina is much larger than I expected it to be and with a second season already in the can, this Christmas special will tide everyone over until the new year. Taking a cue from British series that tend to all have Holiday specials during their hiatuses, this one-off won't progress the narrative much but should have some nice treats for fans of the comic.

Wanna watch something….that is one of the best films of the year?

ROMA (Premieres December 14th on Netflix) – Virtually ignored by the Golden Globes, ROMA has been heralded by many as one of (if not THE) best films of the year. Director Alfonso Cuaron's black and white epic drama may not be the sexiest or most mainstream film, but the story is clearly impactful and timely. While it did get a brief theatrical window, you can check it out in the comfort of your own homes this week!

Wanna watch something….with mermaids (I think)?

TIDELANDS (Premieres December 7th on Netflix) – There are so many international series that get premieres on Netflix that I sometimes cannot tell what is new, what is old, or what exactly some of them are about. Tidelands comes from Australia and seems to be about a mermaids, but that could just be misleading marketing. Based on the trailer above, it looks to be more of a soapy genre story than anything so if that tickles your fancy, check it out.

Wanna watch something….from one of the best comedians you may not know about?

PETE HOLMES: DIRTY CLEAN (Premieres December 15th on HBO) – You may recognize Pete Holmes from his hilarious DARK KNIGHT spoofs or even from his underappreciated HBO series Crashing. Holmes is best known as a stand-up and his new comedy special comes at the perfect time. Everyone can use a good laugh right now and this HBO special looks to be just the right mix of appropriate and raunchy, which just about sums up Holmes' style.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….for fans of true crime series?

THE INNOCENT MAN (Premieres December 14th on Netflix) – This new series looks to be another Netflix hit much like the popular Making a Murderer. Picking up where the 2008 non-fiction book by John Grisham left off, this series works as a standalone work or a sequel of sorts to the book. Marketed as a true crime thriller, this series actually follows the events that came after the exoneration of the titular innocent man. Definitely still a good watch for bingers, this six episode series should be interesting.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….about post-apocalyptic time travel?

TRAVELERS (Premieres December 14th on Netflix) – Canada has so many damn shows, I cannot keep them straight. Especially when they all look exactly the same as one another. This series, entering it's third season, follows a future where time travelers have to help save the world where an armageddon scenario has doomed society. From the trailers, I don't see much fire and brimstone, but it does have Eric McCormack, so it could be kind of scary, I guess.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….with giant transforming robots?

VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER (Premieres December 14th on Netflix) – Any kid from the 80s knows about Voltron. The Netflix revivial of the classic has been airing for seven seasons and this will be the premiere of the final run of episodes. You can binge the dozens of entries that came before this to prep for the ending or you can just bask in what is a much better series than it had any right to be.
