OUR PICKS FOR November 4th – November 10th

Wanna watch something….historic changing on The Walking Dead?

THE WALKING DEAD (Airs November 4th on AMC) – This Sunday makrs the final episode for Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. It came as a surprise earlier this year when it was announced that he and Lauren Cohan were departing the zombie drama, especially since both characters are still at the forefront of the comic book series. Last week's cliffhanger teased a pretty unceremonious fate that doesn't quite fit in with the direction the show has been going so far. Still, this is a major event that will break with the comic series once and for all and will definitely be the most talked about TV episode of the week.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….for fans of time travel and romance?

OUTLANDER (Premieres November 4th on Starz) – The fanbase that surrounds this period drama comes only close to the fervor around TWILIGHT and HARRY POTTER. I cannot speak for the quality of the series, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon. Starz is also well regarded for their prolific nudity and violence, so maybe this is a worthy addition to the DVR.

Wanna watch something….if you wanted a sequel to BRAVEHEART?

OUTLAW KING (Premieres November 9th on Netflix) – David MacKenzie has proven himself to be one hell of a filmmaker thanks to movies like YOUNG ADAM, STARRED UP, and HELL OR HIGH WATER. His latest film follows the character of Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) who was an integral part of Mel Gibson's BRAVEHEART. Telling that same story from a different perspective makes this less a sequel than a fitting companion to that Academy Award winning epic. Check out Chris Bumbray's full review here.

Wanna watch something….with the most original stories on TV?

ROOM 104 (Premieres November 9th on HBO) – If you didn't catch the first season of HBO's anthology series, you missed one of the best shows of 2017. Set entirely within a single motel room, each episode is a self-contained story that can be horror, drama, comedy, or a blend of every genre. Mark and Jay Duplass have created an outlet for their creativity that has no limits and HBO is willing to let them express it in any number of ways. I am glad to say the second season is even better (full review coming soon).

Wanna watch something….for fans of V/H/S and THE ABCS OF DEATH?

DON'T WATCH THIS (Now Streaming on Netflix) – The majority of Netflix series have a lot of build-up and promotion, but this micro anthology of short films dropped right before Halloween. In a partnership with CryptTV, this set of stories are all less than ten minutes long with some clocking in at just 120 seconds. They are pretty damn scary and are a very easy binge. I just hope that they release more of these in the future!

Wanna watch something….celebrating Disney's most famous character?

MICKEY'S 90TH SPECTACULAR (Premieres November 4th on ABC) – The legacy of Mickey Mouse is as iconic as Disney itself. It should come as no surprise that Disney owned ABC will air this variety show that serves as a tribute to Walt's most enduring creation. I have no doubt that most of this will be a way to plug their theme parks, but Disney never shies away from high quality promotion of their own product. At the very least, this should be a nice piece of nostalgia.

Wanna watch something….from one of the best stand-up comics of all time?

JOHN LEGUIZAMO'S LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS (Premieres November 5th on Netflix) – Netflix drops new stand-up specials every week these days, and we have gotten some good ones from the most iconic comedians of all time. The latest veteran to join those ranks is actor John Leguizamo. While his stage performances are hilarious, they are more like one man shows than traditional stand-up routines. This new one looks like a nice skewed glance at the history of Latin America. At the very least, you will learn something, but I guarantee you will laugh, too.

Wanna watch something….that makes nuclear war kinda funny?

PATRIOT (Premieres November 9th on Amazon Prime) – I didn't catch the first season of Patriot until after it debuted. With so many shows on TV and streaming services, it didn't really stand out to me. Revisiting it in advance of the second season, it is a show that deserves a much better marketing campaign. I originally thought it was a straight drama, but it is actually a really funny and really dark story of an undercover operative in the Middle East. Michael Dorman is good in the lead but it is the great supporting cast that includes Kurtwood Smith and Debra Winger that makes this worth checking out.
