OUR PICKS FOR December 24th – 30th

Wanna watch something….that turns New Year's Resolutions into something evil?

INTO THE DARK: NEW YEAR, NEW YOU (Premieres December 28th on Hulu) – Hulu and Blumhouse's holiday-themed anthology series continues with an episode inspired by New Year's Eve. Watching the trailer above, you can see that this episode is going to have some psychological scares in it but still doesn't seem quite as holiday-themed as the creators want you to believe. Still, Carly Chaikin looks to be breaking from her Mr. Robot character to play someone who may be even scarier.

Wanna watch something….even better than Star Trek Discovery?

THE ORVILLE (Premieres December 30th on FOX) – This series surprised me quite a bit when it debuted last year. Seth McFarlane's science fiction series is less Family Guy and more Star Trek: The Next Generation. Sure, the jokes are still plentiful, but they make the titular ship feel more like an actual place rather than the Utopian Enterprise. The postivie and bright episodes harken back to the early 1990s and make this show look and feel like the Trek series we have been waiting for.

Wanna watch something….to get you ready for the ENDGAME?

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (Premieres December 25th on Netflix) – Virtually everyone on the planet has seen AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR by this point, but with more people owning Netflix subscriptions over physical media, now is a great time to turn on Thanos decimating the universe with your family gathered around the Christmas tree opening gifts. Who knows how long INFINITY WAR will be available on Netflix with Disney+ coming in 2019, so enjoy it while you can.

Wanna watch something….truly scary?

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE (Premieres December 30th on Netflix) – There are a lot of people who have buzzed about this film being one of the best scary movies of the last few years. I have always intended to check it out but never found the time. Lo and behold, it is debuting on Netflix just in time for New Year's Eve. So, if you want to watch something different than fireworks and balls dropping, give this one a shot.

Wanna watch something….that will make you nervous about clicking sounds?

HEREDITARY (Premieres December 27th on Amazon Prime) – Along with originals, Prime members also get access to a good number of streaming films. HEREDITARY will be joining the library of movies Prime subscribers have at their disposal between Christmas and New Year's which gives you zero excuse not to check out this very unique horror film before the end of 2018. Hell, maybe it will alter your Best Of list.

Wanna watch something….aristocratic and sexy?

VANITY FAIR (Premiered December 21st on Amazon Prime) – This trailer makes Vanity Fair look less like a dry period piece and more like a snarky contemporary drama. While I doubt it will be as lively as the trailer above makes it seem, the presence of Olivia Cooke (READY PLAYER ONE) and Tom Bateman (THE BODY) makes this seem like it could introduce a new generation to a literary classic.

Wanna watch something….animated from Guillermo Del Toro?

3BELOW: TALES OF ARCADIA (Premieres December 23rd on Netflix) – With Guillermo Del Toro's Trollhunters coming to an end, the next entry in his animated universe comes to life. Sharing some characters with the prior series, 3Below will shift from a fantasy story to a science fiction one. While the animation leaves a little to be desired, the great voice cast which includes Diego Luna, Tatiana Maslany, Nick Offerman, Emile Hirsch, Kelsey Grammer, and Steven Yeun makes up for it.

ANTICIPATION METER

Wanna watch something….for those nostalgiac for the 1990s?

FULLER HOUSE (Premiered December 14th on Netflix) – Anyone else wish the Olsen Twins would cameo on this show? No? Just Me? Oh well. Entering it's fourth season, Fuller House continues to sell it's generic sitcom stories and laugh tracks as if the original ABC series never went off the air. There will be plenty of appearances from John Stamos and Bob Saget, but at this point if you are an adult male checking out this series it is only for Candace Cameron's legs.
