While many have asked "Why SHAZAM!?" when it came to choosing the next new character to introduce into the DCEU, it became ironically clear; SHAZAM! debuted in 1939, right around the time Superman and Batman first appeared on the scene, yet he's been around so long (and, admittedly, not as popular in the modern era) that his comics roots have been largely forgotten by the average moviegoer (if they ever had any idea to begin with) as his popularity waned and others took the spotlight. Originally called "Captain Marvel" (ahem) and later renamed SHAZAM! when DC Comics took over the rights to the character, Billy Batson/Shazam! was hugely popular in his early years, spawning a feature film, a live-action TV show, an animated film and various appearances in other DC projects. As the DCEU got underway, starting with MAN OF STEEL, SHAZAM! was put in rotation to make his big-screen debut in their line-up with LIGHTS OUT director David Sandberg hired to release the lightning with Zachary Levi strapping on the cape and bolt.
Having been one of the first to see the film, I was relieved that it struck a great balance between the humor (which had been largely focused on in the trailers), action, heart and character. While it certainly lives up the "BIG with superpowers" aspect it's also got a lot more going on, including some darker aspects that I did not see coming. As I said in my 9/10 review, "There are so many moments that unfold in this film that will have you smiling from ear-to-ear at how perfect and clever they are, wether they're addressing familiar tropes, embracing the world and situation they're living in or simply turning the genre out a bit, the film is hardly a stale recreation of everything you've seen before and that's a beautiful thing." Chris Bumbray didn't have as good a time as I did, but still enjoyed the film overall, saying in his 7/10 review, "In the end, SHAZAM, while more of a mixed bag than I anticipated, is still relatively unique as far as the genre goes".

And with that, now it's your turn! We want to hear what YOU thought of the film! Naturally, we'd prefer you to comment only if you've seen the film as that's the point here, but do what feels good. Just don't get mad if you get trounced for trolling or posting blatant spoilers in headlines. Healthy debate, genuine thoughts, and respectful interactions is all we ask.
Is SHAZAM! another slam dunk for the DCEU or is it too much of a detour from what came before?
