Oh, shit…here we go. It's no mystery that Paul Feig's take on a rebooted GHOSTBUSTERS has been met with some serious backlash, which seemed to resonate exclusively over the choice to make it an all-female cast, including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Personally speaking, I thought it was an odd choice that felt a bit gimmicky at first, but I've settled into the idea at this point and am looking forward to catching the film to decide for myself what to make of it. Some folks are notably upset about the revamp, which I think stems largely from the fact that this isn't GHOSTBUSTERS 3 with the original cast, especially after years of teasing about the project potentially happening. Unfortunately, that ship has long since sailed and it's time to usher in a new generation of Ghostbusters, be it female, male or…animated. If anything, I'm happy to see them giving the franchise a go and opening the doors for any number of films set within the universe. But, first we have to see how this puppy performs.
So far, reviews have been resoundingly positive with the film currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at 74 percent, a far cry from what many had predicted to be an outright disaster. Our own Chris Bumbray seemed to enjoy it more than most, giving it 8/10 and saying that it "winds up being one of the better all-around big summer blockbusters, and a refreshing, fun movie…" Eric Walkuski wasn't quite as fond of the film, giving it a 5/10, saying "It’s not quite bad, but it never rises above being mediocre ", while over at AITH, The Arrow gave the film a 6/10, saying, "Your enjoyment of this film will rely heavily on your sense of humor and if it gels with the one the film pimps (i.e. juvenile)" So, there you have it. Three different opinions on the film from us. It seems pretty consistent with most comedies in that regard as they rely so much on one's sense of humor, which we all know can vary wildly. Shit, one of my favorite comedies ever is SAVING SILVERMAN and I don't give a f*ck if anyone disagrees.
