What did you think of…Captain Marvel?

It took 21 films in the MCU to get a female-led one on the books and that honor (or curse) goes to CAPTAIN MARVEL. Starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (the 7th character to actually be called Captain Marvel in the comics), a female pilot who garners superhuman photon abilities after an explosion fuses her DNA with a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan in 1968, Danvers was best known as Ms. Marvel up until 2012, where she was promoted to "Captain" in Kelly Sue DeConnick's run on the book that thrust Danvers into a new role with a new costume and hairstyle to boot. The series was cancelled and restarted a number of times, but as a long-standing character in Marvel lore, Danvers was a constant presence, popping up in The Avengers books and each "event series" that was tossed our way. Now, CAPTAIN MARVEL steps up to the celluloid plate, carrying the weight of a character that's had a tough time sticking in the comics, while also being the first female-led film in the decade-long history of Marvel Studios. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Annette Bening, Lashana Lynch, Clark Gregg and Jude Law.

While many have been anxiously awaiting CAPTAIN MARVEL's big-screen debut, it's also had it's share of controversy even before hitting theaters with Larson seeming to bump heads with some of her public commentary that's rubbed many the wrong way. Whether or not that affects the film is yet to be seen, but likely the Marvel brand will be able to withstand the backlash at this point. As for the film itself, the reviews appear to be positive, although not extraordinary. In his 7/10 review, JimmyO said, "It may not be the best in the series, especially with a clumsy and sometimes frustratingly dull first act, but this story certainly offers up a few worthy moments and a couple of cool characters to add to the mix," but also added it's "likely to please a ton of fans looking for a little bit of empowerment and inspiration." We'll have another review up from Kalyn Corrigan on Friday, so that should offer another take on the film.
