Based on the revered novel by Ernest Cline, READY PLAYER ONE charged out of the gate with one very unique and fitting attribute: Steven Spielberg at the helm. Taking on a sci-fi tale that weaves in '80's nostalgia feels like the perfect fit for the filmmaker, who assembled a varied cast to populate this map, including Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller and Lena Waithe. The only question is: Can this group bring Cline's novel to life? Given the daunting task of covering so many pop-culture references, visuals and characters, the term "overstuffed" is a realistic fear. However, Spielberg steering the ship is an ace in the hole…right?
Early reactions from SXSW trumpeted the film as nothing short of amazing and critic screenings have yielded similar, if not slightly less glowing sentiments. Our own Chris Bumbray reviewed the film, saying, "…it can’t be denied that it is what it is and is the best possible version of Cline’s novel that could have been realistically done. Spielberg knows how to make a movie like this hum along beautifully, and while I’m not sure it’s one of his great movies, it’s still a blast."

And with that, now it's your turn! We want to hear what YOU thought of the film! Naturally, we'd prefer you to comment only if you've seen the film as that's the point here, but do what feels good. Just don't get mad if you get trounced for trolling or posting blatant spoilers in headlines. Healthy debate, genuine thoughts, and respectful interactions is all we ask. So, has Spielberg returned to the Amblin days with this one or is it a simple jolt to the senses?
