Update: Well, it looks like the second option was the correct one. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy knew that our hearts have been aching for Westworld spoilers and they delivered by releasing a 25-minute video diving into the "spoilers" of Westworld's second season. The pair responded to their Reddit post, saying, "All right guys. We left this in your hands. Some may feel this is a drastic step, but I, for one, love and trust this community." I'm not about to spoil the video for you, only to say that we know the game and you're going to have to play it to find out.
The first season of HBO's Westworld offered up plenty of twists and turns in its narrative, and as the clues were all there for us to decipher along the way, audiences figured out many of the show's major twists well before they landed. While speaking at the Westworld panel at SXSW last month, Westworld showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy teased that they had a "controversial" plan in order to deal with spoilers, and in a recent Reddit AMA, Nolan and Joy have proposed a massive reveal of the entire plot of the upcoming season. Huh?
Here's exactly what the Westworld showunners said about the proposal on Reddit:
Hey Reddit!
Many thanks for your great questions and thoughts. As I've said before, I've been a member of the reddit community for years (no I'm not going to share my original username…). And I greatly enjoyed watching the friendly folks at this subreddit guess the twists and turns of the season.
It creates a larger problem for us, though, in terms of the way your guesswork is reported online. 'Theories' can actually be spoilers, and the line between the two is confusing. It's something we've been thinking about since last season. The fans of Game of Thrones, for instance, rallied around and protected the secrets of the narrative in part because they already knew those secrets (through season 5).
We thought about this long and hard, and came to a difficult (and potentially highly controversial) decision. If you guys agree, we're going to post a video that lays out the plot (and twists and turns) of season 2. Everything. The whole sordid thing. Up front. That way the members of the community here who want the season spoiled for them can watch ahead, and then protect the rest of the community, and help to distinguish between what's 'theory' and what's spoiler.
It's a new age, and a new world in terms of the relationship between the folks making shows and the community watching them. And trust is a big part of that. We've made our cast part of this decision, and they're fully supportive. We're so excited to be in this with you guys together. So if this post reaches a 1000 upvotes we'll deliver the goods.
Hasta victoria siempre!
Jonah and Lisa
Simply put, this would give Westworld fans the option of learning all of the secrets which the second season has to offer in addition to protecting the rest of the community from being spoiled. At least, that's how it would work in a perfect world. There's no telling what sort of affect this would have on how audiences approach Westworld, and it's also worth considering that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy could be messing with us.
Given the opportunity, would you be down for an entire season's worth of spoilers before the show even started?
The second season of Westworld will premiere on HBO on April 22nd.
