So this is cool! Looks like Issa Lopez, who directed the acclaimed horror film TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID, is going to be teaming up with none-other-than Guillermo del Toro himself to make a goddamn werewolf western! Which sounds rad-as-hell to me!
I personally love when genres mix, especially with westerns! When done well, you get great films like Kathryn Bigelow's awesome vampire-western NEAR DARK, or even to a certain extent THE MANDALORIAN expanding the western sensibilities of STAR WARS (though the less said about COWBOYS VS. ALIENS, the better…). And though it's not the first werewolf western ever made (there's BLOOD MOON that came out in 2014), I think Lopez and tel Toro will be able to make something unique and worthwhile together.
Meanwhile, Collider's The Witching Hour had an exclusive interview with Lopez, and here's what she had to say about the upcoming project:
We started looking at options and he came to me with this idea for a werewolf Western and I loved it because who would think of a werewolf Western directed by a Mexican woman director? It’s such an odd combination; I would definitely want to see that! And I always want to make good movies that I want to see. So it is very dark, it is very violent, it’s a lot of fun.
No release as of yet, but we'll definitely keep you posted.
But what do you guys think? You excited for a western werewolf film from Issa Lopez Guillermo del Toro? If so, what other monsters besides vampires, aliens, and werewolves would work as a western? Either way, sound off below!
Anyway, here's the full interview, if you were curious:
