Last year, Blumhouse and Amazon joined forces for an anthology series called Welcome to the Blumhouse, which is set to consist of eight feature films. The first four films – The Lie, Black Box, Evil Eye, and Nocturne – were released last October, and it was announced that the next four films will be Axelle Carolyn's The Manor, Maritte Lee Go's Black as Night, Ryan Zaragoza's Madres, and Gigi Saul Guerrero's Bingo.
Bingo is now in production, and it has been revealed that the film stars Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Barraza.
Scripted by Guerrero, Shane McKenzie, and Perry Blackshear, Bingo has the following synopsis:
Set in the barrio of Oak Springs, Bingo follows a strong and stubborn group of elderly friends who refuse to be gentrified. Barraza plays the leader of the pack, Lupita, a “chingona” (aka bad ass) who grew up in the neighborhood formerly filled with crime and dangerous characters. Lupita has dedicated her life to cleaning up the neighborhood and creating a community the residents could be proud to call home. Little does Lupita and her friends know, their beloved bingo hall (hence the title) is about to be sold to a much more powerful force than money itself.
Jason Blum is executive producing the film with Jeremy Gold, Marci Wiseman, Lisa Bruce, Lauren Downey, and Raynor Shima.
Barraza was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film Babel. Since then, her credits include roles in Drag Me to Hell, And Soon the Darkness, Thor, The Strain, Coyote Lake, Rambo: Last Blood, and Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Guerrero previously directed the film Culture Shock for the Blumhouse/Hulu anthology Into the Dark.
The new batch of Welcome to the Blumhouse films will be released on Amazon sometime later this year.
