Weekend estimates place Infinity War on track for marvel-ous $235-245M total

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is finally upon us, and it will no doubt be a big cash machine for the Disney and Marvel. Earlier in the week projections for the movie’s opening weekend had it placed around a $225 million tally, with folks saying it would likely take the second-place trophy from STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI ($220 million). Now, however, it looks like even the top spot crown could be in sight, as the current estimates are placing it quite near to STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ($247 million).

According to this morning’s estimates (as of this writing), INFINITY WAR will end the weekend with the second-biggest opening ever, with outlets (like BoxOffice.com, Deadline, and Variety) placing the number anywhere between $235-245 million total. This comes after a tremendous $106 million Friday (including the $39 million from Thursday), the second-largest ever behind AWAKENS’ $119 million and in front of JEDI’s $104 million. Disney is playing it safe by putting their official estimates on the lower end of the scale, but should WAR do even better today and on Sunday (much like BLACK PANTHER) it could tilt toward the higher end of the estimates, and could even pass AWAKENS to have the largest opening weekend ever in film history. So, yeah, pretty big weekend.

There was an insane amount of hype going into the film, and based on reviews and audiences scores, the movie delivered. The movie holds a great 84 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 68 on Metacritic, the latter of which is in line with THE AVENGERS in 2012 (69). As for audience scores, the movie is performing extremely well, with a fantastic 93 percent rating on RT, an 8.7 on Metacritic and an A rating on Cinemascore. As for IMDb, the movie has a tremendous 9.1 score (with over 100,000 ratings), and though that could easily go down, that currently places the movie at #9 on their all-time “Top Rated Movies” list. These great audiences scores signify the movie could have very strong legs in the coming weeks as audiences go back again and again – and tell their friends and family to do the same.

This is obviously a tremendous opening for Marvel and proves this is a cinematic event that captured the attention of the entire movie-going public, especially those who have been on the MCU ride for this entire 10 years. Surely it will perform well in the coming days, and it will be fascinating to see how it plays over the coming weeks. Could Marvel beat their previous highest-earner, THE AVENGERS, for the second time in the same year? Me thinks yes.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is in theaters now. Go see it for the fifth time!
