The Martian climbs back to the top!
On its fourth weekend in theaters, THE MARTIAN once again floated to the #1 spot at the box office with an estimated $15.9 million!
The Matt Damon starrer drifted away from first place last weekend but rebounded despite a storm of new releases that ultimately demonstrated little challenge. Ridley Scott's astronaut thriller is up to $166 million domestic and is nearing $400 million worldwide.
Last weekend's winner GOOSEBUMPS got bumped to a close second with $15.5 million, a 34% dip from its opening. The PG-rated Jack Black-fronted adaptation of the popular R.L. Stine books has a 10-day domestic total of $43.7 million.
Holding onto third place was Steven Spielberg's BRIDGE OF SPIES with $11.3 million, down just 26% from last week's opening. The Tom Hanks Cold War drama has a $32.5 million 10-day domestic total.
Vin Diesel may have 95 million Facebook followers but they don't seem too interested in his movies unless he's flanked by the FAST & FURIOUS crew — his new action-fantasy THE LAST WITCH HUNTER opened in fourth with $10.8 million, barely half of RIDDICK's $19 million start in September 2013. Diesel's evil-fighting epic cost a reported $75 million and got bludgeoned by critics (14% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Adam Sandler's HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 stayed in fifth with $9 million, ahead of the latest found-footage horror entry PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION opening in sixth with $8.2 million. The series has seen diminishing returns since PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 opening to a shocking $52.5 million in 2011, and THE GHOST DIMENSION is the final release of the franchise (it also hits VOD in just a few weeks).
After strong business in limited release, the STEVE JOBS biopic expanded nationwide to place seventh with $7.2 million. The Michael Fassbender-starring drama from director Danny Boyle and writer Aaron Sorkin has a $9.9 domestic total so far, on a reported $30 million cost. (Also of note: the Ashton Kutcher JOBS opened to $6.7 million back in August 2013, so unlike the company's devices perhaps the Apple co-founder himself only holds limited appeal to general audiences.)
Guillermo del Toro's ghost story CRIMSON PEAK slipped to eighth with $5.5 million, a 57% loss from its debut last weekend. The Anne Hathaway/Robert De Niro comedy THE INTERN and the cartel action-thriller SICARIO finished out the list.
Outside the chart, a couple of other new wide releases had a rough time finding eyeballs this weekend: the Bill Murray comedy-drama ROCK THE KASBAH brought in only $1.5 million on 2000 screens, and the live-action version of the colorful 80s cartoon JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS made just $1.3 million despite hitting 2400 screens. At least the attempt at capitalizing on nostalgia only cost $5 million…
Additionally, the expensive fantasy PAN and the inspirational football melodrama WOODLAWN fell out of the Top 10 along with MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS. Meanwhile, Marvel's ANT-MAN is now close to $500 million worldwide thanks to solid business in China.
Next weekend has the Bradley Cooper chef comedy BURNT and the Sandra Bullock political satire OUR BRAND IS CRISIS, along with undead action in SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE and FREAKS OF NATURE.
