Tyler Perry's Boo 2 scares up a win!
Like last Halloween, Tyler Perry put on his wig and lipstick for audience amusement and/or terror to make TYLER PERRY'S BOO 2! A MADEA HALLOWEEN #1 this weekend with an estimated opening of $21.6 million!
The spooky sequel (which marks writer-director Perry's eighth time in the dress as Madea) came out a bit lower than the $28.5 million start of last October's BOO!, which went on to a domestic total of $73.2 million.
The PG-13 costume comedy came with a reported cost of $25 million. Critics didn't find the hilarity in Perry's latest theatrical haunting, giving the follow-up a dreadful 8% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Opening in second place was the new big-budget disaster movie GEOSTORM with $13.3 million.
The feature directing debut of INDEPENDENCE DAY writer/producer Dean Devlin reportedly cost $120 million to create the movie's world-wrecking weather satellite system.
The Gerard Butler sci-fi thriller also pulled down $49.6 million from international audiences for a $62.9 million worldwide opening weekend.
Critics thought the PG-13 destruction event was a catastrophe, giving it an average of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can find the JoBlo review HERE.
The horror movie HAPPY DEATH DAY moved to third place with $9.3 million, a deep cut of 64% from its first place debut last week.
The PG-13 thriller has a ten-day domestic total of $40.6 million and a worldwide total of $53.5 million (on a reported cost of just $4.8 million).
Director Denis Villeneuve's BLADE RUNNER 2049 was in fourth with $7.1 million, bringing the R-rated sequel to a domestic total of $74 million.
The follow-up to Ridley Scott's seminal 1982 sci-fi movie has a worldwide total of $194 million on a reported price tag of $155 million (it opens in China next week).
In fifth place was the new fact-based drama ONLY THE BRAVE with an opening of $6 million.
Despite talent like Josh Brolin and Jeff Bridges, the depiction of elite firefighters didn't seem to spark with moviegoers. The thriller from TRON LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski cost a reported $38 million.
Critics warmed to the true story of the heroic "Granite Mountain Hotshots", giving the movie a 90% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is HERE.
The Jackie Chan thriller THE FOREIGNER was in sixth place with $5.4 million, dropping 58% from its opening last weekend.
The R-rated action-drama from CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell has a ten-day domestic total of $22.8 million and a worldwide total of $111 million (on a cost of $35 million).
IT was lurking in seventh place with $3.5 million. The R-rated Stephen King adaptation has grabbed a monstrous $320 million domestic and $651 million worldwide after seven weekends in theaters.
Opening in eighth place was the new R-rated mystery THE SNOWMAN with $3.4 million.
The Michael Fassbender thriller, which cost a reported $35 million, has made an additional $19.2 million overseas.
Critics froze out the serial killer story (from LET THE RIGHT ONE IN director Tomas Alfredson) with a frigid 9% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is HERE.
Tom Cruise's R-rated crime-drama AMERICAN MADE and the espionage satire sequel KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE closed out the list.
Outside the chart, VICTORIA AND ABDUL, MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE and THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE waved goodbye. The religious drama SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME opened on 1360 screens for $2.5 million, while in limited release, the Colin Farrell/Nicole Kidman horror indie THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER had a decent $28k per-screen average.
Next weekend revives the SAW series for Halloween season with JIGSAW, Miles Teller joins the military in THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, and Matt Damon and Julianne Moore get into mischief in the George Clooney-directed dark comedy SUBURBICON.
