Happy Death Day celebrates first place!
Moviegoers clearly wanted something spooky for Friday the 13th, and put HAPPY DEATH DAY on top this weekend with an estimated opening of $26.5 million!
Despite a lack of familiar faces in the cast, the PG-13 creepy thriller grossed more than five times its reported $4.8 million cost on its opening weekend.
HAPPY DEATH DAY (scripted by former Marvel and DC comic writer Scott Lobdell) marks another success for thrifty horror company Blumhouse, who already scored immense victories from this year's GET OUT ($253 million worldwide) and SPLIT ($278 million worldwide).
Critics had mixed feelings about repeating the same terrifying day with star Jessica Rothe, giving the movie an average 64% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
The sequel BLADE RUNNER 2049 was in second place with $15.1 million, dropping 54% from its first-place opening last week for a ten-day domestic total of $60.5 million.
Praised by critics as well as fans of Ridley Scott's original 1982 sci-fi film, the R-rated follow-up with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford seems to be struggling to attract general audiences (although that's more related to the apparently limited appeal for movie with a $150+ million budget).
That said, the futuristic drama from director Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL) has captured an additional $98 million from international crowds for a $158 million worldwide total.
Opening in third place was the new Jackie Chan movie THE FOREIGNER with $12.8 million.
The R-rated action-drama from CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell is Chan's first big domestic release (besides voice acting) since the 2010 remake of THE KARATE KID, which opened with $55 million.
His new thriller, which also features Campbell's GOLDENEYE Bond Pierce Brosnan, has already collected over $100 million worldwide on a reported cost of $35 million.
Critics weren't overly excited to see the martial arts master back in action, giving the movie a 57% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is HERE.
In fourth place, the adaptation of Stephen King's IT is still luring crowds with another $6 million, bringing the R-rated horror movie to a domestic total of $314.9 million.
The first half of the demon-clown's reign of terror has also snatched almost the exact same amount overseas for a worldwide total of $630 million (on a $35 million reported cost).
The Idris Elba/Kate Winslet romance-drama THE MOUNTAIN BETWEEN US was in fifth with $5.6 million, down 46% from its opening last weekend. The survival story has a ten-day domestic total of $20.5 million on a $35 million reported cost.
Circling sixth place was the R-rated Tom Cruise crime-drama AMERICAN MADE with $5.4 million for a domestic total of $40.1 million on its third weekend in theaters. The $50 million Doug Liman-directed thriller has a worldwide total of $112 million.
KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE was close behind in seventh with $5.3 million, bringing the spy sequel to $89.6 million and $286 million worldwide (on a $104 million cost).
At the bottom was THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE in eighth with $4.3 million, followed by MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE with $4 million, losing 55% from last week's opening. The Judi Dench period drama VICTORIA AND ABDUL added 168 more screens and stayed in the Top 10 with $3.1 million.
Outside the chart, FLATLINERS went to the grave and BATTLE OF THE SEXES concluded its match. The legal drama MARSHALL, starring Chadwick Boseman as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, opened on 821 screens and just missed cracking the list with a $3 million opening.
The success of this summer's WONDER WOMAN didn't translate to the biopic about its creator — PROFESSOR MARSTON AND THE WONDER WOMEN was released on over 1200 screens but opened with only $737,000 (and a per-screen average lower than the fifth weekend of AMERICAN ASSASSIN).
Next weekend has Josh Brolin fighting fires in ONLY THE BRAVE, Michael Fassbender hunts a serial killer in THE SNOWMAN, and Gerard Butler deals with disastrous weather in GEOSTORM.
