Weekend Box Office Report: October 10-12, 2014

Gone Girl isn't gone yet!

The mystery of Ben Affleck's missing mate continues to provide allure for audiences, putting GONE GIRL on top of the box office for a second weekend with an estimated $26.8 million!

Director David Fincher's stylish adaptation of Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel only lost 29% of business from its opening, and is already at a $78.2 million 10-day domestic total. The R-rated drama is collecting strong word-of-mouth, although the spoilery nature of the story means a lot of the buzz is the "I can't tell you about it but you have to see it" variety.

Opening in second was the new PG-13 action-horror release DRACULA UNTOLD with $23.5 million (putting it somewhere in UNDERWORLD territory for first weekends of bloodsucker flicks). For this variation of the iconic vampire, Universal reimagined their classic monster as a fanged anti-hero, with Luke Evans drinking the vein gravy in the CGI-filled $70 million origin story. Audiences gave the latest Vlad version an 'A-' CinemaScore, but critics hammered a stake into it with 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney's new family feature ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY opened in third with $19.1 million. The Steve Carell/Jennifer Garner comedy, based on the children's book with the same gigantic title, received an 'A-' from paying crowds and a (barely) passable critical average of 66% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dropping to fourth place was last week's spooky runner-up ANNABELLE with another $16.3 million, down 56% from its opening. It was enough to keep the creepy doll prequel ahead of Robert Downey Jr's. new courtroom drama THE JUDGE, opening in fifth with $13.3 million. The R-rated movie (the first release from the actor's Team Downey production company) carried a reported $50 million cost, and was acquitted with an 'A-' CinemaScore from moviegoers while the verdict from critics was a harsh 47% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Denzel Washington's THE EQUALIZER came in sixth with $9.7 million, followed by the racy new thriller ADDICTED opening with $7.6 million. Released on just 846 screens, the low-budget adaptation of Zane's saucy book actually had a higher per-screen average than this weekend's top two movies, although critics dumped the R-rated erotic melodrama with 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

THE MAZE RUNNER trotted to eighth and THE BOXTROLLS descended to ninth, while a surprise showing by the documentary MEET THE MORMONS popped up on the chart in tenth with $3.5 million.

Half of last week's Top 10 was swept away as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY finally departed after ten weekends in theaters, LEFT BEHIND simply left after a single week on the list, and THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU, DOLPHIN TALE 2 and NO GOOD DEED disappeared. In limited release, Jeremy Renner's thriller KILL THE MESSENGER opened on 374 screens for $939k total, and the Bill Murray comedy ST. VINCENT and the drumming drama WHIPLASH had solid starts with respective $30k and $23k per-screen averages.

Next weekend brings the latest Nicholas Sparks romance adaptation THE BEST OF ME, Brad Pitt drives a tank in the WWII action-drama FURY, and the Guillermo del Toro-produced computer-animated family film BOOK OF LIFE arrives with Zoe Saldana and Channing Tatum lending their voices. The Michael Keaton tour de force BIRDMAN opens in limited release, while ST. VINCENT and director Jason Reitman's drama MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN expand their releases.
