Mockingjay wins Thanksgiving weekend!
Moviegoers battled through food comas and bargain hunters this weekend to put THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 on top at the box office with an estimated $51.6 million!
The conclusion of Katniss Everdeen's post-apocalyptic struggle dropped 50% from its opening last week as this makes the third Thanksgiving weekend with THE HUNGER GAMES ruling the box office.
The Jennifer Lawrence franchise-ender took in $75.7 million since Wednesday, and converges on $200 million domestic after ten days as it also passes $440 million worldwide (more than halfway to MOCKINGJAY PART 1's $755 million global finish).
The new Pixar movie THE GOOD DINOSAUR opened in second place with $39.1 million (and $55.5 million total since its Wednesday release).
That's a significant divergence from the $90 million debut of this summer's INSIDE OUT, the animation studio's second-biggest domestic hit behind TOY STORY 3. Critics gave the prehistoric "what if?" adventure a 77% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Opening in third place was the ROCKY spinoff CREED with $30.1 million (and $42.6 million since it stepped in the ring on Wednesday).
The boxing drama, reuniting FRUITVALE STATION director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan, cost a reported $35 million and received cheers from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes — substantially higher than the 76% average for Sylvester Stallone's own ROCKY BALBOA in 2006).
The latest James Bond mission SPECTRE was in fourth with $12.8 million for a domestic total $176 million after a month in theaters. Actor Daniel Craig's fourth time out as 007 has crossed $750 million worldwide.
In fifth was THE PEANUTS MOVIE with $9.7 million as it got boosted over the $100 million mark thanks to the holiday weekend. The R-rated Christmas comedy THE NIGHT BEFORE was in sixth place with $8.2 million, a drop of only 17% from last weekend's opening as it comes close to earning its production cost after ten days in release.
The Julia Roberts/Nicole Kidman/Chiwetel Ejiofor thriller THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES was in seventh with $4.5 million, down 32% from its opening last week. Holding eighth was the acclaimed scandal story SPOTLIGHT with $4.4 million as it expanded onto nearly 900 screens, while the Saoirse Ronan drama BROOKLYN also moved onto 845 screens for $3.3 million and ninth place. THE MARTIAN closed out the Top 10 as the sci-fi survival tale has reached $545 million worldwide.
Outside the chart, the new James McAvoy/Daniel Radcliffe feature VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN was decidedly not alive, opening with just $2.3 million (with a per-screen average barely half that of holiday comedy LOVE THE COOPERS as it departed the Top 10 on its third weekend). The latest spin on Mary Shelley's classic now holds the ignominious distinction of being the lowest-grossing movie released on more than 2500 screens.
BRIDGE OF SPIES and THE 33 also slipped off the list, while in limited release, the Eddie Redmayne transgender biopic THE DANISH GIRL started with a solid $46k per-screen average. The Cate Blanchett drama CAROL is also going strong with $50k per-screen in its second limited weekend.
Next weekend brings some holiday horror in the form of KRAMPUS (from TRICK 'R TREAT writer/director Michael Dougherty), plus limited releases of Spike Lee's CHI-RAQ, Harvey Keitel and Michael Caine trying to retain YOUTH, and Michael Fassbender becoming King of Scotland as Shakespeare's MACBETH.
