Mockingjay Part 2 shoots to #1!

The story of Katniss Everdeen came to an end this weekend as THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 2 won the box office with an estimated $101 million!

The finale of the young-adult adaptation scored the lowest opening of the post-apocalyptic series fronted by actress Jennifer Lawrence. The second chapter CATCHING FIRE was the standout with a first weekend of $158 million, while MOCKINGJAY PART 1 fell to an opening $121.8 million. That said, MOCKINGJAY PART 2 still has the fifth-highest opening weekend of releases in 2015.

The Francis Lawrence-directed conclusion of the HUNGER GAMES franchise received slightly higher marks from critics (70% average on Rotten Tomatoes) than PART 1 (65% average). MOCKINGJAY PART 2 has a worldwide total of $247 million after its first weekend.

Slipping to second after two weeks on top was the latest James Bond adventure SPECTRE with $14.6 million. The pricey Daniel Craig 007 entry is up to $153.7 million domestic, and its worldwide total of $678 million has passed CASINO ROYALE ($599 million) and QUANTUM OF SOLACE ($586 million).

Charlie Brown and his friends were in third place with another $12.8 million for THE PEANUTS MOVIE on its third weekend in theaters. Its domestic total is just about touching the $100 million mark (also its reported production cost).

Opening in fourth places was the new R-rated Christmas comedy THE NIGHT BEFORE with $10.1 million. The Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Anthony Mackie holiday romp from director Jonathan Levine cost a reported $25 million and has a 64% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics.

In fifth was the new PG-13 thriller THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES with an opening of $6.6 million. Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman couldn't draw much of a crowd with this $20 million remake of the Oscar-winning Argentinean film, and a 43% critical average probably didn't do any favors.

The holiday comedy LOVE THE COOPERS went from third down to sixth with $3.9 million, a 52% drop from its opening. THE MARTIAN is still going after two months in the Top 10 as it placed seventh and crossed $200 million domestic.

The Oscar-buzzed drama SPOTLIGHT added more than 500 screens and jumped onto the list in eighth place with $3.6 million. The story of the Pulitzer-winning investigation into the Catholic Church sex scandal has a $5.8 million total after two strong weekends in limited release.

The Chilean mining disaster THE 33 was in ninth with $2.2 million, and the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration BRIDGE OF SPIES hangs onto the bottom.

Outside the chart, GOOSEBUMPS and HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 split along with the Bollywood romance PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO. In limited release, the acclaimed Saoirse Ronan drama BROOKLYN expanded to 111 screens for $1.1 million, the Cate Blanchett drama CAROL opened to a solid $62k per-screen average, and the Tom Hardy criminal twins biopic LEGEND started with $20k per-screen.

Next week brings several releases on Wednesday for the Thanksgiving weekend, including the ROCKY spinoff CREED, Pixar's THE GOOD DINOSAUR and the latest take on Mary Shelley's classic VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN, plus the limited release of the drama THE DANISH GIRL.
