Thor strikes again!
The beefy Asgardian holder of Mjolnir pounded the ground once again, putting Marvel's THOR: THE DARK WORLD at the #1 spot with $38.4 million!
While that is a dip of 55% from the Thunder God's first weekend, the sequel is up to a 10-day domestic total of $146.9 million (the first THOR finally fizzled at $181 million). In addition, THOR: THE DARK WORLD is already at $479.9 million worldwide, surpassing the first movie's global finish of $449.3 million.
Coming in second was the week's only new wide release THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY with $30.5 million. It may have taken 14 years for the sequel (again directed by Malcolm Lee, cousin of Spike), but the reunion's opening came fairly close to doubling its reported production cost, not to mention having a higher per-screen average than the top movie ($15k to THOR's $10k) despite being on just over half the number of screens.
Paying customers really ate up THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, giving it a rare 'A+' CinemaScore, and the charismatic cast and holiday theme should keep it strong through the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend.
Still grappling for position in their third week were veteran actors and CG turkeys, with LAST VEGAS this time inching ahead into third place with $8.8 million as it nudges FREE BIRDS into fourth with $8.3 million. JACKASS PRESENTS BAD GRAMPA staggered out of second this weekend, down to fifth place with $7.6 million and a total of $90.2 million after four weeks in theaters.
GRAVITY seems resistant to landing on terra firma, still in sixth place (after seven weekends) and closing on a half-billion worldwide total. ENDER'S GAME slides again down to seventh, but the drama 12 YEARS A SLAVE continues to draw lots of curiosity thanks to its early Oscar buzz and hard look at a dark chapter of history.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS closes out the chart along with the Rachel McAdams romcom ABOUT TIME (which is at $52 million worldwide), while CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 went in the freezer. Outside the chart, critical darling DALLAS BUYERS CLUB added 150 screens for a $1.7 million grab, and Alexander Payne's praised road trip drama NEBRASKA led the limited releases with a $35k per-screen average while Shia LaBeouf's CHARLIE COUNTRYMAN got utterly rejected with just over 500 bucks per-screen.
Next weekend puts Katniss Everdeen back into deadly competition in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE, while Vince Vaughn is apparently responsible for the production of many children in the comedy DELIVERY MAN.
