Spectre is still on top!
James Bond unsurprisingly ruled the box office for a second week, keeping SPECTRE at #1 this weekend with an estimated $35.4 million!
Daniel Craig's fourth time in the tuxedo dropped around 50% from its opening last week, and its domestic total is at $130.7 million after ten days (by comparison, SKYFALL was at $160 million by this point). SPECTRE is also up to a worldwide total around $550 million, approximately halfway to SKYFALL's impressive finish.
Holding in second place was THE PEANUTS MOVIE with $24.2 million, down 45% from its opening last week. Charlie Brown and his friends are at a 10-day domestic total of $82.4 million.
The first of the week's new releases placed third with LOVE THE COOPERS making $8.4 million. The PG-13 Christmastime comedy cost a reported $17 million and features an ensemble that includes Ed Helms, John Goodman, Diane Keaton and Anthony Mackie (who's also in another new holiday comedy next weekend, THE NIGHT BEFORE). Critics gave it very little holiday cheer with a 16% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
THE MARTIAN was in fourth place with $6.7 million over its seventh weekend on the top half of the chart. Ridley Scott and Matt Damon's astronaut survival tale is up to $207 million domestic and will end up passing half a billion worldwide before its mission is complete.
Opening in fifth was the new drama THE 33 with $5.8 million. Detailing the Chilean mine collapse of 2010 and the rescue attempt of the trapped miners (including Antonio Banderas), the movie carried a reported $26 million production cost and received a 40% Rotten Tomatoes average from critics.
GOOSEBUMPS and BRIDGE OF SPIES continue to slowly bring in business after five weekends in theaters, while the Bollywood romance PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO danced into eighth place on just 286 screens (for a better per-screen average than anything in the Top 10 besides SPECTRE).
In ninth was HOTEL TRANSYVLANIA 2, which is now Adam Sandler's highest-grossing movie. Vin Diesel's THE LAST WITCH HUNTER closed out the list.
Outside the chart, THE INTERN departed for a second time, taking along Bradley Cooper's BURNT and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION. The new inspirational sports drama MY ALL AMERICAN with Aaron Eckhart opened with $1.3 million, not enough to crack the Top 10.
In limited release, the new period drama BY THE SEA from writer/director/star Angelina Jolie arrived on 10 screens for a per-screen average less than $10k (and dismissal by critics with a 32% Rotten Tomatoes average). The acclaimed Catholic church scandal drama SPOTLIGHT expanded to 61 theaters and made $1.3 million to land just outside the Top 10.
Next weekend ends the story of Katniss Everdeen with THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2, while Seth Rogen celebrates with Anthony Mackie and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the R-rated holiday comedy THE NIGHT BEFORE and Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman try to deliver thrills with SECRET IN THEIR EYES. Limited releases include Tom Hardy as criminal twins in LEGEND and Cate Blanchett in the Patricia Highsmith adaptation CAROL.
