Avengers keep fighting in first!
Marvel's powerhouse conflict continued to be a major box office draw, as AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR once again ruled the weekend with an estimated $112.4 million!
That is a drop of 56% from last week's record-setting debut for the tumultuous superhero saga, a percentage somewhere in the middle for Marvel's recent second weekends (THOR: RAGNAROK – 53%; BLACK PANTHER – 44%; SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING – 62%; GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 – 55%).
Marvel's jam-packed smackdown has a ten-day domestic total of $450.8 million, the second-highest amount behind the $540 million ten-day total of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (which also still holds the highest second-weekend figure with $149.2 million). INFINITY WAR is already nearing the $459 million final domestic total of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.
The epic clash with Thanos has gathered $1.16 billion worldwide so far, and is the fastest movie in history to cross the billion-dollar barrier (getting there one day ahead of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS). INFINITY WAR has also surged ahead of the $1.15 billion finish of costumed collective CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.
Opening in second place was the new remake of OVERBOARD with $14.7 million.
The PG-13 romantic comedy with Anna Faris and Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez cost a reported $12 million. The role-swapping update of the Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell fave was sunk by critics with a 30% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
A QUIET PLACE was still providing muted chills in third place with $7.6 million, taking it to $159.8 million over its fifth weekend in theaters. The $17 million horror-thriller from John Krasinski has a worldwide total of $255.2 million.
The PG-13 Amy Schumer comedy I FEEL PRETTY was in fourth with $4.9 million for a $37.7 million domestic total after three weekends (on a reported cost of $32 million).
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his embiggened beasts were in fifth place as RAMPAGE grabbed $4.6 million for the weekend. The $120 million arcade-game adaptation from The Rock's SAN ANDREAS director Brad Peyton has a domestic total of $84.7 million and a worldwide total of $377.8 million.
In sixth place was the new Charlize Theron comedy-drama TULLY with an opening weekend of $3.1 million.
The R-rated collaboration from JUNO and YOUNG ADULT duo Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody was embraced by critics with an average of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.
Marvel's smash hit BLACK PANTHER was in seventh place $3.1 million as the Wakandan king claws his way close to $700 million domestic after three months in release. With $1.33 billion worldwide, the African superhero has passed STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI to become the ninth highest-grossing global release ever.
Blumhouse horror cheapie TRUTH OR DARE was in eighth with $1.8 million, followed closely by Broken Lizard's R-rated cop buffoonery SUPER TROOPERS 2 with $1.8 million.
Opening in tenth place was the new thriller BAD SAMARITAN with $1.7 million.
The R-rated horror movie with former Doctor Who and "Jessica Jones" villain David Tennant and Kerry Condon (the current voice of Tony Stark's armor) was directed by INDEPENDENCE DAY writer Dean Devlin.
Critics were split on spending time with Tennant's sadistic billionaire, giving it an average of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Outside the chart, BLOCKERS, TRAFFIK and READY PLAYER ONE (currently at $566 million worldwide) made room for the new releases.
Next weekend has Melissa McCarthy as the LIFE OF THE PARTY and Gabrielle Union defending herself against people BREAKING IN, while limited release offers the Margot Robbie crime-thriller TERMINAL.
