Weekend Box Office Report: May 27-29, 2016

X-Men: Apocalypse wins the weekend!

Many mighty mutants engaged in destructive battle this Memorial Day weekend, putting X-MEN: APOCALYPSE in the top spot at the box office with an estimated $65 million!

Director Bryan Singer's fourth time behind the camera for the superhero series came up far short of the opening of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, which scored $90.8 million when it debuted in May 2014.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, now the ninth Fox feature to adapt Marvel Comics mutants, also started with less than half the $132 million opening of this year's R-rated DEADPOOL (which only cost around a third of the reported $175 million budget for APOCALYPSE).

In fact, among the X-franchise the first weekend of APOCALYPSE is only ahead of THE WOLVERINE ($53 million), FIRST CLASS ($55.1 million) and the orginal X-MEN ($54.4 million) in 2000.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is expected to gather $80 million total over the four-day holiday weekend, and has already collected an additional $185 million from international territories (although it seems unlikely to reach the $747 million worldwide total of DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, or the $763 million global finish of DEADPOOL). Like the movie's cast of characters, critics were divided with a current 48% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

Opening in second place was the sequel ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS with $28.1 million. While Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska all returned (but not director Tim Burton), Disney's colorful fantasy follow-up couldn't even scrape together a quarter of ALICE IN WONDERLAND's stellar $116 million opening back in 2010 (it went on to cross $1 billion worldwide).

The second trip to Lewis Carroll's vibrant wonderland, which came with a reported $170 production price tag, should end up with $35 million over the four-day period and has made an additional $65 million overseas. Critics didn't particularly enjoy the psychedelic journey, giving it 29% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Game adaptation THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE fluttered to third with $18.7 million, a 51% descent from its first-place opening last weekend. The feathered friends flung from mobile devices now have a 10-day domestic total of $66.3 million and a worldwide total of $223.5 million.

In fourth place was Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR with $15.1 million on its fourth weekend in theaters for a domestic total of $372 million, surpassing DEADPOOL's $362 million to become the biggest domestic hit of 2016.

Cap's third solo adventure (well, with some high-profile friends) has also reached $1.1 billion worldwide, passing THE DARK KNIGHT RISES to become the fourth highest-grossing superhero movie in history, with only fellow Marvel releases ahead of it (IRON MAN 3 and the two AVENGERS movies).

NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING was in fifth with $9.1 million, losing 58% of business from last weekend's opening. The R-rated Seth Rogen/Rose Byrne/Zac Efron comedy sequel has a 10-day domestic total of $38.3 million and has made $74.8 million worldwide (on a reported $35 million budget).

In sixth was Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK with $6.9 million for a domestic total of $338 million and $877 million worldwide. Shane Black's R-rated comedy-drama THE NICE GUYS was in seventh with $6.3 million, down 43% from its opening last week. The Ryan Gosling/Russell Crowe detective tale has a 10-day domestic total of $21.7 million.

The George Clooney/Julia Roberts thriller MONEY MONSTER was in eighth, while the Kate Beckinsale period drama LOVE & FRIENDSHIP expanded to nearly 500 screens and jumped into ninth with $2.4 million. Disney's ZOOTOPIA closed out the list, enjoying its thirteenth consecutive weekend in the Top 10 while it comes within a paw's reach of $1 billion worldwide.

Outside the chart, THE DARKNESS and MOTHER'S DAY departed along with THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR. The videogame adaptation WARCRAFT doesn't open in North America until June 10, but was already released in some international territories this weekend and made $31 million.

Next week brings back the half-shell heroes for TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS, while Andy Samberg takes the stage in the satire POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING and "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke finds romance in ME BEFORE YOU.
