Pirates of the Caribbean sails to #1!

Johnny Depp's rum-soaked swashbuckler returned to theaters this Memorial Day weekend and put PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES in first place with an estimated opening of $62.1 million!

The fifth adventure of Captain Jack Sparrow and his fellow brigands wasn't quite a franchise low opening — the first PIRATES movie THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL started with $46.6 million domestic back in summer of 2003 before mooring with a $305 million total.

But it's still a better domestic debut than Depp's recent big summer releases — last summer's sequel ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS opened with a soft $26.8 million, and THE LONE RANGER and DARK SHADOWS each started with a $29 million weekend.

Although the domestic figures for the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchse have diminished since the $423 million finish of DEAD MAN'S CHEST in 2006, the series hasn't dropped significantly in price — DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES cost a reported $230 million.

Outside of North America, where DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES is alternately subtitled as SALAZAR'S REVENGE, the latest sequel opened with $208 million for a worldwide weekend of $270.5 million. (2006's DEAD MAN'S CHEST and 2011's ON STRANGER TIDES both eventually drifted over $1 billion worldwide.)

Critics dropped anchor on the latest (and purportedly final) chapter of Depp's boozy buccaneer, giving it a 32% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can scope the JoBlo review HERE.

Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 remained in second place with $19.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $333.2 million after a month in theaters as James Gunn's space sequel has squeaked past the $333.1 million domestic finish of the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. 

With a $783 million worldwide total, VOL. 2 has not only topped the $773 million global finish of the first, but has also become the biggest comic book superhero movie that doesn't feature Iron Man, Batman or Spider-Man.

Opening in third place was the comedy BAYWATCH with $18.1 million. The R-rated spin on the 90s TV show has pocketed $22.7 million total since it jumped and jiggled into action on Thursday.

Last summer, star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson helped propel CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE to an opening weekend of $35.5 million (ending with $127 million), but his raunchy beach update with Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario barely managed half that amount.

Critics left the new BAYWATCH (which cost a reported $69 million) to flail in the water with 19% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read the JoBlo review HERE.

In fourth place was ALIEN: COVENANT with $10.5 million, cratering by 70% from its first-place opening last weekend. Director Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS sequel/ALIEN prequel has a ten-day domestic total of $57.3 million.

The teen drama EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING was in fifth with $6.1 million, down 47% from last week's third-place opening for a ten-day domestic total of $21.5 million (on a $10 million reported cost). The sequel DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL held sixth place with $4.4 million, losing 38% from its opening last week as it reached a ten-day domestic total of $13.5 million.

After that, the R-rated Goldie Hawn/Amy Schumer comedy SNATCHED was in seventh with $3.9 million for a domestic total of $40.1 million (on a reported cost of $42 million), and Guy Ritchie's medieval action movie KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD followed in eighth with $3.2 million and $33.8 million total (on a $175 million reported cost). The animated THE BOSS BABY is still in the Top 10 after nine weeks, and Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST finally crossed $500 million domestic.

Outside the chart, THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS skidded off the list (after making a cool billion just from international audiences) along with HOW TO BE A LATIN LOVER. And Jordan Peele's horror-thriller GET OUT has now racked up $241 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget.

Next weekend, DC Comics' Amazonian heroine visits the world of men in WONDER WOMAN, and a popular kids' book gets animated in CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE.
