Weekend Box Office Report: May 13-15, 2016

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Captain America: Civil War still stands on top!

Marvel's superheroes continued their squabble for another successful box office weekend, keeping CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR at number one with an estimated $72.5 million!

That represents a 59% drop in business from the sequel's opening last week, a second-weekend decrease nearly identical to previous Marvel releases AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and IRON MAN 3.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR has a 10-day domestic total of $295.8 million, while its worldwide total is at a whopping $940.8 million (all told, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has now grossed over $10 billion worldwide).

Disney continues rolling in dough with THE JUNGLE BOOK, which remains in second place with $17.7 million over its fifth weekend in theaters. Director Jon Favreau's live-action/CGI amalgam is up to a domestic total of $311.7 million and has gathered a total of $828 million worldwide.

Opening in third place was the new Wall Street dramatic thriller MONEY MONSTER with $15 million. The R-rated George Clooney/Julia Roberts feature (directed by Jodie Foster) cost a reported $27 million to make, and critics didn't feel particularly invested with 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In fourth place was the new PG-13 horror movie THE DARKNESS with an opening of $5.1 million. The Kevin Bacon supernatural thriller had a minimal production cost of $4 million, but it has received a frightful 0% percent critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The ensemble comedy MOTHER'S DAY was in fifth with $3.2 million, down 70% from the actual holiday last weekend. Disney's ZOOTOPIA held onto sixth place with $2.8 million, and has collected $970 million after nearly three months in release.

Things were slow toward the bottom of the chart with THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR in seventh with $2.5 million as it managed to cross $150 million worldwide. The Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele comedy KEANU was in eighth, followed by BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT and Melissa McCarthy's THE BOSS.

Outside the chart, the videogame adaptation RATCHET & CLANK disappeared along with BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, which ended up with $328 million domestic and around $875 million worldwide. In limited release, the Colin Farrell curiosity THE LOBSTER had an admirable $47k per-screen average, and the Kate Beckinsale period drama LOVE & FRIENDSHIP started with $33k per-screen.

Next weekend, writer-director Shane Black presents Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling as THE NICE GUYS, Seth Rogen battles more rowdy college students in NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING, and a time-wasting mobile game comes to animated life in THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE.
