Weekend Box Office Report: May 10-12, 2019

Another weekend on top for Avengers: Endgame!

For a third weekend at the box office, Marvel's superhero epic clutched first place in its gauntlet-grip as AVENGERS: ENDGAME gathered an estimated $63 million!

With a colossal domestic total of $723.4 million on its third weekend, the extensive all-star spectacle is now the third-biggest release in domestic history as it passed Marvel's own THE AVENGERS ($623 million), AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR ($678 million) and BLACK PANTHER ($700 million).

On its rapid journey up the chart and into history, the comic-book blockbuster sequel has also zoomed past the final domestic totals for JURASSIC WORLD ($652 million), STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI ($620 million) and James Cameron's TITANIC ($659 million).

The crucial 22nd chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also continued to dominate the globe, collecting an outrageous worldwide total of $2.48 billion after 17 days in theaters. The PG-13 culmination of events (and start of a new Marvel age) cost a reported $350 million.

Opening in second place was the new live-action/CG fantasy POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU with $58 million.

The PG-rated adventure scored the highest opening ever for a videogame adaptation, passing the $47.7 million start of the Angelina Jolie-starring LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER back in 2001. It also nearly doubled the $31 million opening of the animated POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE when it was released twenty years ago (which demonstrates the lasting appeal of the critter-collecting series).

The family comedy with Ryan Reynolds voicing the titular yellow sleuth has also captured $112.4 million from international audiences for a worldwide total of $170.4 million. GOOSBUMPS director Rob Letterman's portrayal of the popular rabbit-creature (joined by humans Justice Smith, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe) cost a reported $150 million.

Critics found the pocket-monster exploits moderately amusing if occasionally surreal, giving the movie a 63% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the first "fresh" certification for a videogame movie). You can catch the JoBlo reviews HERE and HERE.

In third place was the new PG-13 comedy THE HUSTLE with an opening weekend of $13.5 million.

A gender-swapped twist on the 1988 Steve Martin/Michael Caine comedy DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, the PG-13 competition of con artists Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway also made $13.7 million from overseas crowds for a worldwide weekend of $27.2 million. (Originally titled NASTY WOMEN, the movie was shifted from its intended release in August 2018.)

Critics certainly didn't fall for the attempted deception, giving the dastardly ladies a grim average of 16% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review can be found HERE).

The PG-13 psychological thriller THE INTRUDER relocated to fourth place with $6.6 million, down by 39% from its opening last weekend. The $8 million  Dennis Quaid/Michael Ealy/Meagan Good tale of homeowner horror has a ten-day domestic total of $20.9 million.

In fifth place was the R-rated Charlize Theron/Seth Rogen romcom LONG SHOT with $6.1 million, dropping by 37% from last week's opening. The politcal comedy from director Jonathan Levine (WARM BODIES, SNATCHED) has a ten-day domestic total of $19.7 million and $22.9 million worldwide, on a reported cost of $40 million.

Opening in sixth place was the new comedy POMS with $5.1 million for the weekend.

The PG-13 counterprogramming release, with Diane Keaton and Pam Grier leading a retirement home cheerleading squad, cost a reported $10 million. (Comparatively, Keaton's comedy BOOK CLUB came out on Mother's Day weekend last year and opened to $13.5 million, before continuing to $68.5 million domestic on a $10 million budget.)

Critics weren't exactly roaring with enthusiasm for the elderly pep rally, giving the movie a 29% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The musical comedy UGLYDOLLS was in seventh place with $3.9 million, losing 54% from its opening last weekend. The PG-rated animated feature based on the plush toys has a ten-day domestic total of $14.2 million (on a reported cost of $45 million).

In eighth place was faith-based drama BREAKTHROUGH with $2.4 million on its fourth weekend, giving the PG-rated story a domestic total of $37.1 million on a reported $14 million cost.

In ninth place was the new biopic TOLKIEN with an opening weekend of $2.1 million.

Based on the early years of "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" creator J.R.R. Tolkien (with Nicholas Hoult as the famed fantasy author), the PG-13 WWI-era drama cost a reported $20 million.

Critics weren't entirely captivated by the real-life romance and friendships of the Middle Earth maker, giving the movie a 49% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is HERE and back again.

At the bottom of the list was CAPTAIN MARVEL with $1.8 million, reaching $423.7 million domsetic on its tenth weekend. The $170 million introduction of Brie Larson's space soldier has a worldwide total of $1.12 billion.

Outside the chart, supernatural horror movie THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA was scared away along with DC Comics superhero SHAZAM!, Disney's live-action DUMBO and the comedy LITTLE.

Next weekend has Keanu Reeves annihilating all adversaries in the hitman sequel JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM, various canines are good boys and girls in A DOG'S JOURNEY, and drama happens in THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR.
