Weekend Box Office Report: March 4-6, 2016

Zootopia takes the top!

Disney's latest animated feature was the big winner this weekend as ZOOTOPIA was #1 at the box office with an estimated $73.7 million!

The bustling computer-generated city and its citizenry of anthropomorphic critters scored the biggest opening ever for a non-Pixar animated movie from Disney (their smash FROZEN opened with $67 million before ultimately collecting $400 million).

ZOOTOPIA also had the highest opening for an animated feature released outside the summer season, and its 98% on Rotten Tomatoes is the best critical average of 2016 so far.

In international territories (where the movie is alternately known as ZOOTROPOLIS), the fox and friends have made an additional $158.8 million, thanks in part to getting released last weekend.

Opening in second place was the sequel LONDON HAS FALLEN with $21.7 million. The R-rated action-thriller, which brings back Gerard Butler as the head-stabbing Secret Service agent protecting President Aaron Eckhart, cost a reported $60 million.

While its price tag was cheaper than the $70 million of the original OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, that movie opened with $30.3 million back in March of 2013 before nearly reaching $100 million domestic. LONDON HAS FALLEN has brought in another $62 million from international crowds, and has a current 25% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes.

After three weekends on top, R-rated comic book anti-hero DEADPOOL tripped down to third place with $16.4 million. The violent but lovable loon has now made an insane $311 million domestic and a worldwide total of $673 million (defeating THOR: THE DARK WORLD's $644 million and IRON MAN 2's $623 million).

In fourth place was Tina Fey's new comedy-drama WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT with an opening of $7.6 million (a little more than half the $13.9 million debut of Fey's SISTERS, which opened against STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS). The R-rated adaptation of war journalist Kim Barker's book "The Taliban Shuffle" cost a reported $35 million and has a 60% Rotten Tomatoes average from critics.

Alex Proyas' pricey mythological action movie GODS OF EGYPT shifted from second to fifth place with $5 million, a drop of 64% from its opening last weekend. The period procedural search for Christ's body RISEN was in sixth with $3.8 million and seems likely to be gone from theaters before Easter weekend (unless it's resurrected).

KUNG FU PANDA 3 is still kicking in seventh place with $3.5 million on its sixth weekend in theaters. Boosted by its Oscar wins for Best Actor and Best Director, THE REVENANT surged two spots to eighth with $3.3 million and is now at a global total of $429 million.

The Hugh Jackman/Taron Egerton skiing biopic EDDIE THE EAGLE drifted to ninth with $3.1 million, down nearly 50% from last week's opening, while the supernatural horror movie THE WITCH closed out the list as it topped $20 million domestic.

Outside the chart, the heist thriller TRIPLE 9 disappeared after a single week in the Top 10, joined by the comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE and the Jesse Owens biopic RACE. Best Picture winner SPOTLIGHT was pushed back onto 1200 screens for $1.8 million, and the R-rated horror movie THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR (featuring former "The Walking Dead" actress Sarah Wayne Callies) was released on 550 screens for $1.2 million.

Next weekend offers producer J.J. Abrams' secretive thriller 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, the R-rated Sacha Baron Cohen spy comedy THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY, the romantic comedy THE PERFECT MATCH, and the religious drama THE YOUNG MESSIAH.
