Dumbo flies to first!
An adorable young elephant was the main attraction this weekend as DUMBO ascended to the top of the box office with an estimated opening of $45 million!
Disney's latest live-action spin on an animated classic couldn't rise to the openings of their BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ($174 million), THE JUNGLE BOOK ($103 million) or CINDERELLA ($67 million), but connected better than the 2016 update of PETE'S DRAGON ($21.5 million).
For director Tim Burton, DUMBO got a better start than his recent adaptations of MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN ($28.8 million) and DARK SHADOWS ($29.6 million), but lagged far behind the opening his live-action version of Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND, which opened to $116 million in 2010.
The PG-rated fairy tale also captured an additional $71 million from international audiences, swooping to a worldwide opening weekend of $116 million.
Also featuring Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Colin Farrell and Michael Keaton along with the gravity-defying pachyderm of the title, the remake cost a reported $170 million.
Critics were only halfway charmed by the floppy-eared circus act, giving the movie a 50% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Flap on over to the JoBlo review HERE.
The menacing duplicates of US skulked down to second place with $33.6 million, sliced by 52% from last weekend's opening. After ten days, writer-director Jordan Peele's R-rated horror-thriller has an eyebrow-raising domestic total of $128.2 million.
Peele's second feature, with the family of Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke hunted by their murderous opposites, has a worldwide total of $174.5 million (on a reported cost of $20 million).
Space superhero CAPTAIN MARVEL moved to third place with $20.5 million, soaring to a domestic total of $353.8 million and a worldwide total of $990.6 million after four weekends.
Brie Larson's heavy-hitter has now overtaken the domestic finishes of Marvel's own GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY ($333 million) and SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ($334 million), plus the domestic totals of DC Comics distinguished competitors SUICIDE SQUAD ($325 million), BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE ($330 million) and AQUAMAN ($334 million).
The teen romance FIVE FEET APART held onto fourth place with $6.2 million, bringing the PG-13 drama to $35.8 million domestic and $50.6 million worldwide on its third weekend (it cost a reported $7 million).
Opening in fifth place was the R-rated anti-abortion drama UNPLANNED with $6.1 million (grossing just over its reported $6 million cost). Critics were divided on the hot-button topic, giving it a current 53% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
The animated family feature WONDER PARK was in sixth place with $4.9 million, reaching a domestic total of $37.8 million on its third weekend. The PG-rated animal comedy has a worldwide total of $52.2 million, on a reported cost of $80 million.
In seventh place was the PG-rated sequel HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD with $4.2 million. The $129 million animated adventure has a domestic total of $152.9 million and $501.8 million worldwide, finally outdistancing the $494 worldwide finish of the original HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON in 2010.
The R-rated drama HOTEL MUMBAI entered the list in eighth place with $3.1 million as it expanded to 924 screens after its limited release debut last weekend.
The fact-based depiction of the Taj Hotel terrorist siege, with Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, holds a 73% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes (you can check out the JoBlo review HERE).
TYLER PERRY'S A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL was in ninth place with $2.7 million, which takes the $20 million comedy sequel to a domestic total of $70 million.
At the bottom was the new Matthew McConaughey comedy THE BEACH BUM with an opening of $1.8 million on 1100 screens.
The latest effort from SPRING BREAKERS filmmaker Harmony Korine seems to follow the downward trend of McConaughey's star vehicles after the openings of GOLD ($3.7 million), WHITE BOY RICK ($8.8 million) and this January's thriller SERENITY ($4.4 million).
The R-rated tale of a stoner named Moondog cost a reported $5 million. Critics were minimally amused with McConaughey's sun-loving loafer, giving the movie a 52% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Outside the chart, the Julianne Moore drama GLORIA BELL left with comedy sequel NO MANCHES FRIDA 2, the action/sci-fi epic ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL and the animated sequel THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART.
Next weekend resurrects Stephen King's horror story PET SEMATARY for a new adaptation, DC Comics' own Captain Marvel hits the screen in SHAZAM!, and Sam Rockwell and Taraji Henson are THE BEST OF ENEMIES.
