The crowds keep visiting Zootopia!
Disney's talking animals held onto the #1 spot this weekend as ZOOTOPIA won the box office for a second time with an estimated $50 million!
The original computer-animated feature dropped only 33% from its opening last weekend, giving it an impressive 10-day domestic total of $142.6 million (for comparison, KUNG FU PANDA 3 has a current domestic total of $136.4 million after seven weeks in theaters).
On top of that, ZOOTOPIA (also known as ZOOTROPOLIS) has collected an additional $288 million from international audiences for a worldwide total of $431.3 million.
Opening in second place was the new PG-13 thriller 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE with $25.2 million. The latest J.J. Abrams stealth production, loosely tied to the 2008 monster movie CLOVERFIELD (which opened with $40 million), surprised everyone with its reveal in January. The John Goodman/Mary Elizabeth Winstead doomsday scenario only cost a reported $15 million and has a strong 91% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Resilient R-rated mercenary DEADPOOL held onto third place with $10.8 million. Ryan Reynolds' guns-and-quips killer has endured in the top half of the chart for five weekends, with a domestic total now at $328 million (passing the totals of the first two IRON MAN movies) and a worldwide total of $708 million.
The action-thriller LONDON HAS FALLEN was in fourth with $10.6 million, a drop of 50% from last week's opening for the $60 million R-rated Gerard Butler sequel. Tina Fey's comedy WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT followed in fifth with $4.6 million, down 38% from its opening last week.
Opening in sixth place was the new romantic comedy THE PERFECT MATCH with $4.1 million. It was joined on the lower half of the chart by the new "kid Jesus" story THE YOUNG MESSIAH with $3.4 million and the R-rated Sacha Baron Cohen spy comedy THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY with just $3.1 million — far from when the actor could open BORAT to $26.4 million or BRUNO to $30 million.
Of that trio of low-opening new releases, the Louis Leterrier-directed GRIMSBY easily had the biggest budget ($35 million) while the biblical tale THE YOUNG MESSIAH had the highest critical average with 63% on Rotten Tomatoes (plus Sean Bean!). Alex Proyas' GODS OF EGYPT and the Joseph Fiennes drama RISEN closed out the list.
Outside the chart, Leonardo DiCaprio's THE REVENANT finally crawled out of the Top 10, along with EDDIE THE EAGLE, KUNG FU PANDA 3 (just now opening to international audiences) and THE WITCH. In limited release, the Helen Mirren/Alan Rickman/Aaron Paul drone thriller EYE IN THE SKY opened with a $23k per-screen average.
Next weekend has the continuing post-apocalyptic young-adult franchise THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT, the Jennifer Garner religious drama MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN (on Wednesday) and the gymnastics comedy THE BRONZE, plus limited release of the Michael Shannon sci-fi thriller MIDNIGHT SPECIAL.
