How to Train Your Dragon 3 keeps circling #1!
The animated fantasy sequel HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD led the box office for a second weekend with an estimated $30 million!
The latest PG-rated adventure of Hiccup and his faithful fire-breathing friend Toothless had a dive of 45% from last weekend's opening for a ten-day domestic total of $97.6 million.
The third feature in the high-flying franchise has also scooped up an additional $277.7 million from international regions (where it opened several weeks ago), ascending to a worldwide total of $375.3 million on a reported $129 million cost.
Opening in second place was the new PG-13 comedy TYLER PERRY'S A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL with $27 million.
Tyler Perry's eleventh (and purportedly final) time in the dress and wig had a start somewhere in the middle for the MADEA series, under the $41 million opening of MADEA GOES TO JAIL in 2009 (the franchise high) but better than the $21.2 debut of previous entry BOO 2! A MADEA HALLOWEEN in October 2017.
Critics thought actor/writer/director Perry's last outing as Madea was kind of a drag, giving the sequel a 24% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place was director Robert Rodriguez's action/sci-fi saga ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL with $7 million. The live-action version of the popular anime/manga has a domestic total of $72.2 million on its third weekend.
Produced and co-written by James Cameron, the $170 million futuristic epic has made an impact with overseas crowds for a worldwide total of $350.4 million so far.
The animated sequel THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART was in fourth place with $6.6 million. The second PG-rated adventure of Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks' brick alter-egos has snapped up $91.6 million domestic and $152.7 million worldwide after four weekends.
Oscar champ GREEN BOOK made a return trip to the Top 10 in fifth place with $4.7 million as it steered back into wide release. The fact-based PG-13 drama with Viggo Mortensen and Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali has traveled to $75.9 million domestic and $188 million worldwide on a $23 million reported cost.
Wrestling comedy-drama FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY was in sixth place with $4.6 million, a 40% chokeslam to the mat from its wide opening last weekend. Director Stephen Merchant's $11 million depiction of WWE Superstar Paige's journey to the ring has a domestic total of $14.9 million.
In seventh was the PG-13 comedy ISN'T IT ROMANTIC with $4.6 million, bringing the $31 million Rebel Wilson/Liam Hemsworth romcom to a domestic total of $40.2 million after three weekends.
In eighth place was the new R-rated drama GRETA with an opening of $4.5 million.
Director Neil Jordan's psychological thriller with Chloe Moretz and Isabelle Huppert was only moderately intriguing to critics, who gave it a 58% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
The Taraji P. Henson romcom WHAT MEN WANT was in ninth place with $2.7 million, taking the R-rated remake of the 2000 Mel Gibson movie WHAT WOMEN WANT to a domestic total of $49.6 million and a worldwide total of $55.9 million (it cost a reported $20 million).
At the bottom was the horror sequel HAPPY DEATH DAY 2 U with $2.5 million. The PG-13 Blumhouse thriller has a domestic total of $25.2 million and a worldwide total of $54.4 million on a thrifty $9 million cost.
Outside the chart, the Liam Neeson revenge thriller COLD PURSUIT disappeared along with the Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston drama THE UPSIDE and the faith-based melodrama RUN THE RACE.
Animated Oscar winner SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE climbed back onto 2400 screens to land just outside the list with a $2.1 million weekend, while the Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper musical drama A STAR IS BORN got a post-ceremony boost with $1.8 million.
In limited release, the universally acclaimed (100% on Rotten Tomatoes) moon landing documentary APOLLO 11 launched into 120 theaters for $1.6 million and a per-screen average of $13k, while filmmaker Gaspar Noe's new R-rated horror head-trip CLIMAX had an adequate $24k per-screen average.
Next weekend brings the arrival of Brie Larson as Marvel's powerful space warrior CAPTAIN MARVEL, while limited releases include the Ethan Hawke/Chris Pratt Western THE KID.
