Wonder Woman deflects the competition!
For a second weekend, the legendary heroine of DC Comics was on top at the box office as WONDER WOMAN made an estimated $57.1 million!
That represents a drop of only 44% from its opening last week, a hold nearly as strong as the Amazon warrior herself. The majority of big-budget comic book adaptations (even well-received entries such as DEADPOOL, THE DARK KNIGHT and THE AVENGERS) lose 50-60% of business in their second weekends, with Sam Raimi's first SPIDER-MAN a rarity with a dip of just 37% from its opening.
Director Patty Jenkins' $150 million origin story of the lasso-whirling superhero has a ten-day domestic total of $205 million, and Gal Gadot also roped in an additional $230 million from international audiences for a worldwide total of $435 million.
Another powerful woman was in second place as THE MUMMY opened with $32.2 million.
Ostensibly the launch of Universal's "Dark Universe" franchise (i.e., reboot series), the latest attempt to revive one of their classic monsters had Tom Cruise battling the titular villainess (played by Sofia Boutella). But it couldn't touch the $43.3 million start of the Brendan Fraser version of THE MUMMY back in 1999 (or even the $36 million opening of its spinoff THE SCORPION KING, for that matter).
Cruise may have lost domestic box office potency outside of the sturdy MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series (only OBLIVION otherwise performed better than THE MUMMY with a $37 million opening), but he remains a star around the globe. His latest stunt-filled action-adventure made an additional $141 million from international crowds, for a worldwide opening weekend of $174 million.
Director Alex Kurtzman's shambling CGI spectacle (which cost a reported $125 million) didn't satisfy critics, who buried THE MUMMY with a 17% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.
In third place was the animated superhero CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE with $12.3 million, down 48% from its opening last week. The adaptation of the popular kids' books has a ten-day domestic total of $44.5 million.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES floated in fourth place with $10.7 million, bringing the domestic total to $135.8 million. Johnny Depp's fifth time around as Captain Jack Sparrow has also sailed past $600 million worldwide. Marvel's space sequel GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 was in fifth with $6.2 million for a domestic total of $366.3 million after a month-and-a-half in theaters.
Opening in sixth place was the new horror-thriller IT COMES AT NIGHT with $6 million.
The R-rated survival story with Joel Edgerton only cost a reported $5 million. Critics gave the isolated post-apocalyptic drama a solid 86% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
The comedy BAYWATCH continued to sink in seventh place with $4.6 million and a domestic total of $51 million for the R-rated remake of the popular 90s TV series.
In eight place was the new drama MEGAN LEAVEY with an opening of $3.7 million.
The fact-based story of a Marine (played by Kate Mara) and her combat dog was saluted by critics with an average of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is HERE.
Ridley Scott's ALIEN: COVENANT was in ninth with $1.8 million (it's over $180 million worldwide), and the teen drama EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING finished up the list.
Outside the chart, SNATCHED departed along with DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL and KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD.
Next weekend features the return of Pixar's talking vehicles in CARS 3, Scarlett Johansson and her friends have R-rated mischief in ROUGH NIGHT, Tupac gets a biopic with ALL EYEZ ON ME, and a shark terrorizes Mandy Moore in 47 METERS DOWN. Limited releases include THE BOOK OF HENRY (from JURASSIC WORLD director Colin Trevorrow).
