Weekend Box Office Report: June 5-7, 2015

Spy slides into first!

Audiences went looking for laughs and espionage this weekend, putting SPY in the #1 slot at the box office with an estimated $30 million!

Star Melissa McCarthy's action-comedy (also featuring Rose Byrne, Jason Statham and Jude Law) started better than last summer's TAMMY ($21.5 million) but below 2013's THE HEAT, which opened to $39.1 million before going on to a $160 million domestic total. SPY cost a reported $65 million and has also collected an additional $56.6 from overseas.

The R-rated twist on the spy genre reunited McCarthy with her BRIDESMAIDS and THE HEAT director Paul Feig, who will also be working with the actress on the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS reboot/spinoff/whatever. Critics saluted McCarthy's secret agent heroics (95% on Rotten Tomatoes), and crowds gave the movie a 'B+' CinemaScore.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's disaster movie SAN ANDREAS was shaken to second place with $26.4 million, a 52% drop from its opening last weekend. The earthquake flick is rapidly shifting toward a $100 million domestic total after 10 days.

Opening in third place was the new supernatural spooker INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3 with $23 million. The directing debut of James Wan collaborator Leigh Whannell came in below CHAPTER 2's $40 million opening in 2013, but the PG-13 prequel only cost $10 million. Critics weren't completely startled (59% on Rotten Tomatoes) while moviegoers gave it a 'B+' CinemaScore.

In fourth place was the new feature continuation of HBO's Hollywood bros show ENTOURAGE with $10.4 million (and $17.4 million since its Wednesday opening). The R-rated update on Vincent Chase's fictitious film career came with a $30 million price tag and didn't impress critics (30% on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences gave it an 'A-' CinemaScore.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was still motoring in fifth with $7.9 million as the Tom Hardy/Charlize Theron post-apocalyptic partnership coasted past $300 million worldwide. PITCH PERFECT 2 dropped from second to sixth with $7.7 million, but its $160.9 million domestic total now makes it the third biggest musical behind CHICAGO and 1978's GREASE.

Disney's expensive sci-fi adventure TOMORROWLAND came in seventh with $7 million as it has reached a global total of $170 million. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON was in eighth with $6.2 million as Marvel's superheroes nudged aside HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II to become history's fifth highest-grossing worldwide release with $1.34 billion.

Bradley Cooper's theoretical star power didn't shine much light on Cameron Crowe's ALOHA, which dropped to ninth with $3.3 million — a 65% loss from last week's opening. The remake of the 1982 frightener POLTERGEIST closed out the list with $2.8 million.

Outside the chart, we saw FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, HOT PURSUIT and the animated HOME disappear. The new Beach Boys biopic LOVE & MERCY brought in $2.2 million on 438 screens.

Next weekend has only one major release as the dinosaurs return in JURASSIC WORLD. The drama ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL opens in limited release.
