Jurassic World is still getting visitors!
For the third weekend in a row, dinosaurs remained the biggest attraction at the box office to keep JURASSIC WORLD on top with an estimated $54.2 million!
The movie has also reached a $500 million domestic total after just 17 days in theaters, smashing another new record as it becomes the highest-grossing release of 2015.
In addition, JURASSIC WORLD is up to a $1.23 billion worldwide total, supplanting IRON MAN 3 to take the #8 spot on the all-time global grossers list. (The original JURASSIC PARK made $1.02 billion — in 1993 dollars.)
But right behind it was Pixar's INSIDE OUT with $52.1 million, down just 42% from its opening last weekend. The colorful emotions have collected a 10-day domestic total of $184.9 million, putting it on track to become one of the animation studio's biggest successes.
Opening in third place was Seth MacFarlane's R-rated comedy TED 2 with $33 million. The continuing adventures of Mark Wahlberg and his foul-mouthed bear couldn't approach the first movie's surprising $54.4 million debut in 2012 (TED went on to $218 million domestic and a remarkable $549 million worldwide).
Still, the $68 million sequel is off to a much better start than MacFarlane's A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST, which opened with $16.7 million last May. Critics were less than halfway amused by TED 2 (47% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers gave it a 'B+' CinemaScore.
Opening in fourth place was the new dog drama MAX with $12.2 million. Critics weren't particularly moved by the canine war veteran (38% on Rotten Tomatoes) but audiences gave it an 'A' CinemaScore.
Things take a sharp drop on the list after that, with SPY in fifth place with $7.8 million. Melissa McCarthy's R-rated comedy stands a good chance of making it past the $100 million mark domestically before it finishes. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's quaker SAN ANDREAS was in sixth with $5.2 million as it rumbled to a worldwide total of $439 million.
The comedy-drama DOPE was in seventh with $2.8 million, slipping 53% from its opening last week. After that was INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON hanging onto the bottom after nine weekends in theaters.
Outside the chart, PITCH PERFECT 2 took off with $180 million total, along with Disney's TOMORROWLAND (with half that amount). The Beach Boys biopic LOVE & MERCY has gathered $9.2 million so far, and the teen drama ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL expanded to 354 screens and came up just short of $1 million for the weekend.
Next weekend lets you celebrate Independence Day with the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg in TERMINATOR: GENISYS, or you can spend time writhing with Channing Tatum and company in MAGIC MIKE XXL. Both movies open on Wednesday.
