Wonder Woman packs a powerful punch!
DC Comics' Amazonian warrior finally got her big-screen solo spotlight this weekend, and put WONDER WOMAN in first place with an estimated opening of $100.5 million!
The popular heroine may not have topped the opening of the other entries in the DC Extended Universe (MAN OF STEEL – $116 million, SUICIDE SQUAD – $133 million, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE – $166 million), but director Patty Jenkins' effort set a record for biggest debut by a female filmmaker, defeating the $85 million start of Sam Taylor-Johnson’s FIFTY SHADES OF GREY.
Diana of Themiscyra's journey into the world of men also set the record for a female-fronted superhero movie — not that there's been much competition (lookin' at you, Marvel). The previous leader was the 2004 Halle Berry CATWOMAN, which ended with a domestic total of $40 million.
As for comic book adaptations, Gal Gadot's bullet-deflecting protagonist defeated openings by the likes of IRON MAN ($98 million), DOCTOR STRANGE ($85 million), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER ($95 million) and this year's LOGAN ($88.4 million).
The WWI adventure, which cost a reported $150 million, also lassoed $112.5 million from international crowds for a worldwide opening weekend of $223 million (more than GREEN LANTERN made globally in its entire run).
The first movie starring the most recognizable female superhero on the planet also had the benefit of positive critical reaction — the movie has a 93% average on Rotten Tomatoes (check out the JoBlo reviews HERE and HERE).
In second place was a decidedly different superhero movie — the animated CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE opened with $23.5 million.
The DreamWorks adaptation of Dav Pilkey's popular children's books reportedly cost a relatively modest $39 million. Principal Krupp's alter-ego and his tightie-whities were applauded by most critics, who gave it an 86% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Drifting to third was last weekend's winner PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES with $21.6 million, sinking by 65% from its opening. The fifth chapter in the Johnny Depp swashbuckling series has a ten-day domestic total of $114.6 million, and (as SALAZAR'S REVENGE) has sailed beyond $500 million worldwide.
Marvel's sequel GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 was in fourth with $9.7 million for a domestic total of $355.4 million after five weekends in release. Chris Pratt and his squabbling space crew have a worldwide total of $816.6 million.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's BAYWATCH was in fifth place with $8.5 million, losing 54% from its third-place opening last week. The R-rated beach comedy has an 11-day domestic total of $41.7 million, buoyed by an additional $25 million from overseas business.
ALIEN: COVENANT continues to lose altitude in sixth with $4 million as Ridley Scott's R-rated prequel/sequel has a worldwide total of $173.8 million. Teen melodrama EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING was in seventh with $3.3 million, while the Goldie Hawn/Amy Schumer comedy SNATCHED fought with DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LONG HAUL and KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD for the scraps at the bottom of the list.
Outside the chart, THE BOSS BABY crawled away with Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, which finally danced out of the Top 10 after three months in theaters.
Next weekend has Tom Cruise battling the new version of a classic monster in THE MUMMY, Joel Edgerton is plagued by a plague in IT COMES AT NIGHT, and Kate Mara and her dog go to war in MEGAN LEAVEY.
