Weekend Box Office Report: July 3-5, 2015

Jurassic World is still open for business!

The dinosaurs continue to reign after a month in theaters, keepingĀ JURASSIC WORLD on top over the July 4th weekend with an estimated $30.9 million!

The theme park havoc has reached a domestic total of $558.1 million (in record time) and its seemingly unstoppable worldwide total is up to $1.38 billion, clawing its way past AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON to become the fifth highest-grossing release in history.

Very close behind in second place was Pixar's INSIDE OUT with $30.1 million (and may actually end up being the weekend's winner when tomorrow's actual figures are reported). Its current $246.1 million domestic total pushes the emotions ahead of the animation studio's BRAVE, CARS and TOY STORY 2.

Opening in third was TERMINATORY GENISYS with $28.7 million, and a $44.1 million total since its Wednesday opening.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic cyborg previously ruled this holiday weekend, time-traveling to the #1 spot with 1991's T2: JUDGMENT DAY and 2003's T3: RISE OF THE MACHINES (both rated R, versus the PG-13 of GENISYS). The Arnie-free TERMINATOR SALVATION opened with $42 million in May of 2009 (behind NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2).

Bringing the original star back for a $155 million franchise revival (directed by THOR: THE DARK WORLD's Alan Taylor and co-starring Emilia Clarke from "Game of Thrones") obviously wasn't a slam dunk. Critics terminated the time-twisting reboot/sequel with 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, but moviegoers gave it a 'B+' CinemaScore.

In fourth place was Channing Tatum's hip-grinding follow-up MAGIC MIKE XXL with $11.6 million for the weekend and $26.6 million since it started filling its thong on Wednesday.

The first MAGIC MIKE started out with a surprising $39.1 million back in 2012 (it opened behind TED). The stripper sequel only cost $14 million, twice that of the original (which went on to $113 million domestic and $167 million worldwide).

Critics weren't entirely elated with the sweaty male physiques (63% on Rotten Tomatoes) but the target audience was there to applaud it with an 'A' CinemaScore.

Seth MacFarlane's trash-talking teddy bear sequel TED 2 was in fifth with $11 million. The second R-rated adventure of Mark Wahlberg and his fuzzy thunder-buddy plunged 67% from its opening last weekend. It has a 10-day domestic total of $58.3 million, less than half of what the original TED made in the same time frame.

On the lower half of the list, the war dog drama MAX was barking in sixth with $6.6 million, down 45% from last week's opening. Melissa McCarthy's action-comedy SPY came in seventh with $5.5 million as it cleared $200 million worldwide, and The Rock was rumbling in eighth with another $3 million for SAN ANDREAS.

The teen cancer drama ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL popped into the Top 10 with $1.3 million as it expanded to 870 locations, and DOPE hung onto the bottom in tenth.

Outside the chart, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD drove into the sunset along with INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. In limited release, the Amy Winehouse documentary AMY made a splash with a $37k per-screen average.

Next weekend has DESPICABLE ME's jabbering little MINIONS in their solo adventure, along with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley in the sci-fi thriller SELF/LESS (from director Tarsem Singh) and the low-budget horror movie THE GALLOWS.
