Weekend Box Office Report: July 29-31, 2016

Jason Bourne comes back for big bucks!

Moviegoers were glad to see Matt Damon's scrappy amnesiac agent return to action, putting JASON BOURNE on top at the box office this weekend with an estimated $60 million!

The latest globetrotting espionage thriller, which reunites Damon with previous BOURNE director Paul Greengrass, trounced the $27 million opening of the original THE BOURNE IDENTITY back in 2002.

JASON BOURNE also exceeded the $52.5 million opening of the 2004 sequel THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, but couldn't quite get to the $69.2 million start of 2007's THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (the no-longer conclusion to the series). However, the new sequel does mark the second-biggest domestic opening for star Matt Damon behind ULTIMATUM.

Having the actor reprise the titular alias also resulted in a financial improvement over the $38.1 million opening of the 2012 spinoff THE BOURNE LEGACY, which instead featured Jeremy Renner as a chem-addicted operative from the same secret program that trained Damon's character.

The PG-13 action movie has also made $50.1 million from overseas for a worldwide weekend total of $110.1 million (on a reported production budget of $120 million). Not everyone was excited about Bourne's reappearance, though — critics gave his new assignment a 56% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The sci-fi sequel STAR TREK BEYOND descended to second with $24 million, losing nearly 60% of impulse power from its first place opening last weekend. The third in the rebooted TREK series has a 10-day total of $105.7 million, plus another $54.8 million from international audiences.

Opening in third place was BAD MOMS with $23.4 million. The new R-rated comedy, which has actresses Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn and Christina Applegate engaging in bawdy behavior, only cost a reported $20 million to produce. Critics gave the lurid ladies a 63% average on Rotten Tomatoes.

The animated animals of THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS continue to grab cash with their paws in fourth place with $18.2 million. The latest release from DESPICABLE ME creators Illumination Entertainment is nearing $400 million worldwide after four weekends in theaters.

In fifth was the PG-13 horror movie LIGHTS OUT with $10.8 million, down 50% from last week's opening for a 10-day total of $42.8 million. The darkness terror with Maria Bello and Teresa Palmer only cost a reported $5 million and has made an additional $20.8 million internationally.

The sequel ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE slipped to sixth with $10.5 million, and the new GHOSTBUSTERS reboot followed in seventh with $9.8 million as it crossed the $100 million domestic mark on its third weekend.

The new PG-13 thriller NERVE came in eighth for the weekend with $9 million, and has a $15 million domestic total since its Wednesday opening. The Dave Franco/Emma Roberts online dare game (adapted from Jeanne Ryan’s novel) cost a reported $20 million and scored 56% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Pixar's FINDING DORY was in ninth place with $4.2 million. The highest-grossing animated movie in domestic history also has a worldwide total of $830.5 million, which still trails the $895 million finish of FINDING NEMO. Closing out the Top 10 was THE LEGEND OF TARZAN as it climbed past $300 million worldwide.

Outside the chart, MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES disappeared along with THE INFILTRATOR and HILLARY'S AMERICA: THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. In limited release, Woody Allen's CAFE SOCIETY added 500 screens and made $2.2 million.

Next weekend brings DC Comics' villain team to life in SUICIDE SQUAD, and Kevin Spacey becomes a cat in NINE LIVES.
