Dunkirk holds in first!
For a second weekend, Christopher Nolan's WWII movie DUNKIRK was on top at the box office with an estimated $28.1 million!
The filmmaker's critically applauded war drama dropped 44% from its opening last weekend for a ten-day domestic total of $102.8 million.
Nolan's account of the Allied troop evacuation from the titular French city has also collected $131.3 million from international audiences, bringing it to a worldwide total of $234.1 million.
The PG-13 ensemble epic (which cost a reported $100 million) has made $40 million of its total box office haul from IMAX screenings.
Opening in second place was the animated comedy THE EMOJI MOVIE with $25.6 million.
Sony's feature-length movie about anthropomorphic social media ideograms cost a reported $50 million. Critics responded by essentially just typing the poop emoji — the movie has an 8% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review is right HERE.
In third place was the R-rated GIRLS TRIP with $20 million, dipping just 35% from its opening last weekend.
The comedy with Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Tiffany Hadish has a ten-day domestic total of $65.5 million (on a reported cost of $19 million).
The New Orleans debauchery from UNDERCOVER BROTHER director Malcolm D. Lee is the summer's breakout raunch comedy, zipping past SNATCHED ($45.8 million) and BAYWATCH ($58 million), and leaving ROUGH NIGHT in the gutter with just $21.8 million.
In fourth place was the new Charlize Theron action movie ATOMIC BLONDE with an opening of $18.5 million.
The R-rated espionage thriller from JOHN WICK co-director David Leitch cost a reported $30 million (that initial Keanu Reeves hitman movie started with $14.4 million).
Critics mostly appreciated Theron's brutal Berlin fisticuffs with a 75% average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING continued crawling in fifth with $13.5 million. Marvel's web-swinging superhero has a domestic total of $278.3 million after a month in theaters, leaping over the $262 million domestic finish of previous reboot THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in 2012.
In sixth place, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES kept fighting with $10.3 million. The $150 million capper to the relaunched simian trilogy has a domestic total of $118.6 million after three weekends, dragging far behind the $208.5 million total of previous chapter DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.
The animated DESPICABLE ME 3 was in seventh with $7.7 million. The sequel continues the franchise's global domination with a worldwide total of $819 million.
In eighth was filmmaker Luc Besson's sci-fi adventure VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS with $6.8 million, losing 60% of business from its modest opening last week. The expensive adaptation of the French comic has a ten-day domestic total of $30.6 million.
The R-rated crime thriller BABY DRIVER was in ninth place with $4 million over its fifth week on screens. Edgar Wright's latest has a $92 million domestic total and a worldwide total of $138 million, on a reported cost of $34 million.
At the bottom with $3.5 million was WONDER WOMAN, which has been firmly in the Top 10 for nine weeks. The DC Comics heroine is already the summer's highest-grossing domestic release as it still pushes toward $400 million.
Outside the chart, Kumail Nanjiani's comedy THE BIG SICK left the list along with horror movie WISH UPON. In limited release, director Kathryn Bigelow's fact-based drama DETROIT opened in 20 locations for an $18k per-screen average, and Al Gore's documentary AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER started with a per-screen average of $32k.
Next weekend brings Stephen King's sprawling multi-genre story to life in THE DARK TOWER, Halle Berry tries to rescue her son in the thriller KIDNAP, and DETROIT expands into wide release. In limited release, fellow Avengers Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen solve a crime in WIND RIVER.
