Ant-Man stands tall at #1!
For a second weekend, Marvel's shrinking superhero took the top spot at the box office as ANT-MAN gathered an estimated opening of $24.7 million!
Paul Rudd's diminutive friend of insects dropped 56% from its opening last week, but has a 10-day domestic total of $106 million and $226.4 million worldwide so far.
Opening in second place was the new action-comedy PIXELS with $24 million. The high-concept movie from director Chris Columbus freatures Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage battling an invasion of retro videogame characters, and came with a reported $90 million cost.
Critics yanked the plug on PIXELS with 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, and moviegoers gave it a 'B' CinemaScore. The PG-13 release has also earned an additional $25.4 million from international crowds.
Those little MINIONS were in third place with $22.1 million as the DESPICABLE ME prequel has reached a $261.6 million domestic total after three weekends in theaters. The jabbering yellow henchmen's effort to take over the world finds them with a $759 million global total.
Amy Schumer's R-rated comedy TRAINWRECK was in fourth with $17.3 million, with the Judd Apatow production down only 42% from last weekend's opening. Its 10-day total is at $61.5 million on a reported $30 million budget.
Fighting its way to fifth was the new Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama SOUTHPAW with a $16.5 million opening. The R-rated movie from director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY, THE EQUALIZER) got Jake in beastly shape but got a mixed critical response of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences cheered the ring redemption with an 'A' CinemaScore.
In sixth was the new teen drama PAPER TOWNS with an opening of $12.5 million. The latest John Green adaptation didn't quite reach the heights of THE FAULT IN OUR STARS' initial success (it opened with $48 million last June and went on to $307 million worldwide), but the movie only cost a reported $12 million and has made $28.5 million worldwide so far. Critics were cool to the coming-of-age tale (58% on Rotten Tomatoes) and crowds gave it a 'B+' CinemaScore.
Pixar's INSIDE OUT was sorting memories in seventh with $7.3 million (it's up to $550 million worldwide), followed by the summer smash JURASSIC WORLD in eighth with $6.9 million as the dinosaur park's success has overtaken THE AVENGERS on both the domestic and worldwide all-time charts.
Sir Ian McKellan's senior Sherlock moved up a spot to ninth with $2.8 million for MR. HOLMES (still on just 686 screens), while TERMINATOR GENISYS looks headed for the scrapyard (albeit with $305 million worldwide).
Outside the chart, the horror cheapie THE GALLOWS disappeared along with sequels TED 2 and MAGIC MIKE XXL. The new found-footage exorcism flick THE VATICAN TAPES only scared up $850k on 427 screens.
Next weekend has Tom Cruise back with more stunt-filled espionage in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION, and Ed Helms takes over for Chevy Chase as head of a new Griswold VACATION (on Wednesday). Limited releases include the drama THE END OF THE TOUR.
