Hotel Transylvania 3 sinks its fangs into first!

Adam Sandler's animated monster crew returned this weekend and took the top spot at the box office as HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION opened with an estimated $44.1 million!

The latest chapter of the comedic creatures started out between the $42.5 million opening of the first HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA in 2012 and the $48.4 million debut of HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 in 2015 (both of those movies hit screens at the end of September).

Director Genndy Tartakovsky's Bermuda Triangle cruise collected $1.2 million from a preview showing a couple of weeks back, giving it a domestic total of $45.3 million. It has also grabbed $54.8 million from international audiences for a $100.1 million worldwide total.

The PG-rated CG feature, which also includes the voices of Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi and Keegan-Michael Key, cost a reported $80 million (approximately the same amount spent on each of the previous two entries in the series).

Critics just barely approved of the third time around with Sandler's unusual family, giving the sequel a 60% average on Rotten Tomatoes. You can sail over to the JoBlo review HERE.

Marvel's ANT-MAN AND THE WASP was reduced to second place with $28.8 million, shrinking by 62% from its opening on top of the chart last weekend.

That second-weekend drop is larger than Marvel's last few movies (AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – 55%; BLACK PANTHER – 44%; THOR: RAGNAROK – 53%) but the same amount as last summer's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, which eventually stuck around for a $334 million domestic total.

Director Peyton Reed's $160 million sequel with Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly has gathered $150.9 million from overseas for a worldwide total of $283.7 million.

Opening in third place was Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's new action movie SKYSCRAPER with $25.4 million.

Johnson's PG-13 riff on DIE HARD/THE TOWERING INFERNO came out lower than his previous summer disaster spectacle SAN ANDREAS, which started with $54.5 million before reaching $155 million domestic and $473 million worldwide.

Aside from the $18.5 million opening of last year's R-rated BAYWATCH remake, SKYSCRAPER actually marks the actor's lowest domestic opening since PAIN AND GAIN ($20.2 million) in 2013.

Johnson's $125 million reunion with his CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE director Rawson Marshall Thurber made an additional $40.4 million internationally, climbing to a worldwide opening of $65.8 million.

Critics were divided on the high-rise catastrophe, giving the movie an average of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review can be found HERE).

Pixar's INCREDIBLES 2 was in fourth place with $16.2 million on its fifth weekend in theaters. With a domestic total of $535.8 million, Brad Bird's sequel has passed fellow superhero movie THE DARK KNIGHT to become the ninth highest-grossing release in domestic history. The return of the Parr family has also accumulated $856.9 million worldwide so far.

In fifth was dinosaur sequel JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM with $15.5 million, stomping its way to a domestic total of $363.2 million and $1.13 billion worldwide.

R-rated prequel THE FIRST PURGE was in sixth place with $9.1 million, down by 47% from its first weekend. The $13 million Blumhouse production has a domestic total of $49.5 million and a worldwide total of $72.6 million.

The sci-fi comedy SORRY TO BOTHER YOU expanded to 800 screens and surged into seventh place with $4.2 million. The R-rated oddity with Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson and Armie Hammer has a domestic total of $5.3 million after its limited release premiere last week.

The Josh Brolin/Benicio Del Toro sequel SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO was in eighth place with $3.8 million, while comedy UNCLE DREW and heist spinoff OCEAN'S 8 finished up the list.

Outside the chart, R-rated comedy TAG ran away with Mr. Rogers documentary WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? and comic book sequel DEADPOOL 2 (leaving the Top 10 with $730 million worldwide).

In limited release, the acclaimed comedy EIGHTH GRADE had an outstanding $63k per-screen average. The movie is currently at a 99% average on Rotten Tomatoes, and you can attend the JoBlo review HERE. Meanwhile, director Gus Van Sant's new biopic DON'T WORRY, HE WON'T GET FAR ON FOOT, featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill, started out with a $20k per-screen average.

Next weekend has Denzel Washington damaging more bad guys in sequel THE EQUALIZER 2, everyone sings more ABBA songs in musical sequel MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN, and the internet terrifies more people in the horror sequel UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB.
