Joker is still on top!
The Clown Prince of Crime continued his box office reign over his second weekend as JOKER held on to first place with an estimated $55 million!
The R-rated origin story of Gotham's laughing menace only dipped by 43% from last weekend's opening. Compared to other comic book competition, that's a smaller second-weekend drop than WONDER WOMAN (43.3%) and BLACK PANTHER (44%), although the latter opened with a colossal $202 million on its first weekend.
Director Todd Phillips' $55 million adapation of the chaotic DC Comics villain has a ten-day domestic total of $192.7 million, already making it the eighth-highest grossing release of 2019.
The inception of Joaquin Phoenix's cackling agent of anarchy has also grabbed $351.2 million from international audiences for an eyebrow-raising worldwide total of $543.9 million.
Opening in second place was the new PG-rated animated version of THE ADDAMS FAMILY with $30.2 million.
Directed by the SAUSAGE PARTY team of Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, and featuring the voices of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Moretz and Finn Wolfhard, the update of the spooky clan (not seen on the big screen since 1993's live-action ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES) cost a reported $40 million.
Critics weren't that crazy about revisiting the outlandish Addams household, giving the movie a 44% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Get creepy and kooky with the JoBlo review HERE.
In third place was the new Will Smith vs. Will Smith movieĀ GEMINI MAN with an opening of $20.5 million.
For Smith's leading-man releases, the thriller opened just above 2015's crime-comedy FOCUS ($18.6 million) but below nearly everything else from sci-fi dud AFTER EARTH ($27.5 million) through I, ROBOT ($52.1 million) and I AM LEGEND ($77.2 million) to this summer's live-action reboot of ALADDIN ($91.5 million).
The PG-13 action movie directed by Ang Lee, who shot the movie at 120 fps (compared to cinema standard 24 fps) even though almost no theaters can show that frame rate, cost a reported $138 million.
Also featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong, the clash of generational killers also collected $39 million overseas for a $59.5 million worldwide weekend.
The sci-fi story, about a middle-aged assassin fighting his younger clone, has been kicking around Hollywood for two decades with nearly every high-profile actor imaginable (Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Clint Eastwood, etc.) cycling through the dual roles at some point.
Critics didn't derive much excitement from seeing Will scrapping with his de-aged self, giving the movie a 26% average on Rotten Tomatoes. Face off with the JoBlo review HERE.
The animated family movie ABOMINABLE was in fourth place with $6.1 million on its third weekend. The PG-rated Yeti adventure from DreamWorks has a domestic total of $47.9 million and $108 million worldwide, on a reported $75 million cost.
In fifth place was the PG-rated drama DOWNTON ABBEY with $4.9 million. The $20 million extension of the British TV series has a domestic total of $82.6 million and $152.6 million worldwide after four weekends.
The R-rated comedy-drama HUSTLERS was in sixth place with $3.8 million, bringing the Jennifer Lopez/Constance Wu crime story near $100 million domestic and up to $121.6 million worldwide on a reported cost of $20 million.
Remaining in seventh place was the Judy Garland biopic JUDY with $3.2 million. The PG-13 drama with Renee Zellweger as titular actor-singer has a domestic total of $14.9 million.
In eighth place was R-rated horror sequel IT: CHAPTER TWO with $3.2 million on its sixth weekend haunting theaters. The $70 million conclusion of Stephen King's clown terror has a domestic total of $207.1 million and a worldwide total of $445.6 million.
Opening in ninth place was the new R-rated comedy JEXI with $3.1 million.
Directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (BAD MOMS and BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS), the movie features Adam Devine as a guy who becomes infatuated with the OS of his new phone (voiced by Rose Byrne).
Critics weren't amused by the latest spin on today's technology-obsessed culture, powering down the movie with a 15% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
At the bottom of the list was the PG-13 astronaut thriller AD ASTRA with $1.9 million. On its fourth weekend, the $80 million Brad Pitt sci-fi drama has a domestic total of $47 million and a worldwide total of $120.3 million.
Outside the chart, Sylvester Stallone's sequel RAMBO: LAST BLOOD entered retirement and the R-rated comedy GOOD BOYS had enough adult fun for the time being.
In limited release, filmmaker Bong Joon ho's award-winning PARASITE started out with an astonishing per-screen average of $125k, not only the highest of the year but also the best of any movie since LA LA LAND in 2016.
The R-rated crime/comedy/drama/thriller about a family of grifters currently holds a glowing 99% critical average on Rotten Tomatoes (the JoBlo review is HERE).
Next weekend has Angelina Jolie engaging in more Disney villainy in the sequel MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL and the undead-killing quartet returns in ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP, while limited releases include Taika Waititi's JOJO RABBIT, the Robert Pattinson/Willem Dafoe drama THE LIGHTHOUSE, and the horror movie TRICK.
