Jumanji climbs to the top!

The new year began with some box office fluctuation as JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE took over the #1 position with an estimated $36 million!

After two weekends of taking the runner-up spot to lightsabers and space battles, the sequel jumped ahead of its competition and has arrived at a domestic total of $244.3 million.

Behind the $353 million domestic finish of FURIOUS 7 in 2015, JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE is now the second-highest grossing release for star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, also zooming past the $225 million total of last year's THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS.

Made for a comparatively frugal $90 million, the PG-13 adventure (also starring Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black) has now collected $519 million worldwide.

Opening in second place was the new PG-13 horror release INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY with $29.2 million.

The supernatural spinoff with star Lin Shaye started out between the openings of INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 ($40 million) and CHAPTER 3 ($22.6 million). The original INSIDIOUS had the lowest opening of the franchise with $13 million in 2011.

This fourth (and supposedly final) entry cost a reported $10 million, and grabbed an additional $20 million from international audiences for a worldwide weekend of $49.3 million.

Critics apparently thought the series should remain in the Further, giving THE LAST KEY an average of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the JoBlo review HERE.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI moved to third place with $23.5 million, which takes the sequel to a domestic total of $572.5 million on its fourth weekend in theaters.

Director Rian Johnson's divisive tale in a galaxy far, far away has overtaken the $532 million domestic finish of last year's ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, but is just past halfway to the record-holding $923 million of THE FORCE AWAKENS.

The transitional chapter of heroes and villains has a worldwide total of $1.2 billion (ROGUE ONE finished with just over $1 billion, while THE FORCE AWAKENS topped $2 billion).

Hugh Jackman continued to hold attention with THE GREATEST SHOWMAN in fourth place with $13.8 million. The circus musical has collected $75.9 million domestic and $150 million worldwide (on a reported cost of $84 million).

The singing sequel PITCH PERFECT 3 was in fifth with $10.5 million, giving it a domestic total of $85.9 million on its third weekend in release. The $45 million musical comedy now has $141 million worldwide, almost halfway to the $287 million global finish of PITCH PERFECT 2.

Animated bull feature FERDINAND was in sixth place with $7.7 million, which gives the John Cena-voiced beast a $70.4 million domestic total and $183 million worldwide.

In seventh place was the R-rated drama MOLLY'S GAME with $7 million as it expanded to 1600 locations.

The fact-based story with Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba has a domestic total of $14.2 million since it was released Christmas Day on a couple hundred screens.

The feature directing debut of writer Aaron Sorkin had a healthy response from critics, currently holding an 82% average on Rotten Tomatoes. The JoBlo review can be found HERE.

The Gary Oldman drama DARKEST HOUR added another 800 screens for a $6.3 million weekend in eighth place. The Winston Churchill biopic has a domestic total of $28.3 million after seven weeks slowly expanding in limited release.

Pixar's COCO was in ninth with $5.5 million for a $192 million domestic total and $589 million worldwide. Director Ridley Scott's modified drama ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD ended the list with $3.5 million and a $20.1 million total since Christmas Day.

Outside the chart, Matt Damon's DOWNSIZING and R-rated comedy FATHER FIGURES were dismissed. In limited release, Margot Robbie's skating drama I, TONYA jumped with $2.4 million after adding nearly 200 screens, and Steven Spielberg's drama THE POST continues to do brisk business with $1.7 million for the weekend (a $47k per-screen average) before it gets a wide release next week.

Next weekend offers several new options in wide release, including Liam Neeson's latest travel dilemma THE COMMUTER, the bear sequel PADDINGTON 2, Taraji P. Henson's assassin thriller PROUD MARY, and the expansion of Steven Spielberg's THE POST.
